Faith, Trust & Pixie Dust! Jenn & Kevin 10/12/14 Italy/ADH/France - The End (7/2016 New TR Link!)

Monday October 20 - Cruise Day 3

Another day at sea! I apologize that my pictures for the day are a little disjointed and unorganized - a good portion of our sea days were spent napping and/or abusing the heck out of the on demand library in our room and, well, I didn't photograph those moments (had I known that it would take me 8 months to get to this day, I would have taken better notes!)

We slept much later this morning, and rolled out of bed with very little planned for our day - the only real scheduled event was our Champagne tasting at 12:15. Kevin had never been a big wine drinker, but with all the copious bottles of free champagne gifted to us he was starting to come around to it, so we figured the class would be a good way to educate ourselves some more about the drink!

We made it to breakfast around 9:30am, and I only grabbed a photo of my plate (Kevin had - wait for it - pancakes, waffles and hash browns, I promise).

From 12 o'clock: MICKEY WAFFLE! with syrup, a breakfast taco/rollup, sad bacon, a pancake, a hash brown, mini croissant, breakfast potatoes (different from the hash brown!) and some corned beef hash. The breakfast wrap was surprisingly spicy, and the potatoes were yummy!

Now, let me take a minute to wax on about the corned beef hash. I had never really had it before this trip (I sampled it at our Crystal Palace breakfast, but whatever they served there is different than DCL's), and thought about trying it the previous day, but passed. I sampled some this morning because it smelled so good, and OH MY GOODNESS, my world was changed. This became my new favorite breakfast item of the entire trip. Honestly, I think it was starting to make me queasy by the time we got off the boat (god knows how much grease or other nastiness is probably in there) but it tasted so good that I don't care a bit. Expect plenty of corned beef hash on future breakfast plates.

After breakfast we decided to try out the Midship Detective Agency, except we seemingly misplaced our detective badge card needed for the game, so we headed back to Deck 5 to just create a new game. As we walked by the atrium, we noticed the princess meet & greet was taking place:

I have to say, this is brilliant. One line, all the princesses, boom boom boom. Of course Elsa & Anna still demand the hard-ticketed line, but for the other ladies this is a fabulous setup! I wish they would introduce it in the parks!

We selected the Muppets mission (aka the "hard" setting) and set off to find our first interactive art piece for the game. You can sort of tell which pieces of art are interactive/a part of the game because of them being screens instead of regular art, but even if you didn't they have a symbol on the ground in front of them where you have to stand for the game. At the sign up stations is a map showing where each picture is located, so you would know where to go throughout the ship. We only ever ran into other people a handful of times, which was nice! The other great thing about the game is you can pick it up on any day by showing your badge to any of the marked art, and it will remind you where to go to continue your mission.

Right before we woke up a portrait

After about an hour of running around the ship, it was coming close to Movie Quotes Trivia in O'Gills, so we dropped our detective materials off at our stateroom and headed down to Deck 4 to play. Being that Kevin is a self-declared movie buff we figured we'd have a decent shot here.

Well - we were pretty bad at this. A lot of it involved 80s movies which are definitely not my forte, and only kind of Kevin's. He ended up being the one who knew most of our answers, and we only got 13 out of 25 right! Kevin was quite disappointed in himself.

After trivia, we decided to just walk around the Europa and general area a bit, since our Champagne class in half an hour was just across the hall at Ooh La La. Along the way, I noticed something strange had happened to my gel manicure -

My silver-tipped nails had turned gold! There wasn't anything under them either! I think it was because of the chemicals in the hand wipes we used at every restaurant - going forward I intentionally didn't rub the wipes over my nails, and they faded back from gold to silver. So weird!

As we were walking out of The Tube, we bumped into one of the servers from Skyline. "Ahhh hello Michelle! We missed you!" she said, which confused the heck out of us since I'm not Michelle. "Ah no, that is your husband!" She replied, which made Kevin balk even more at being Michelle (or I guess Michel?)

We headed over to Ooh La La then and took our seats at the tables already set up for our arrival. At the beginning of the class the glasses were empty, though they filled them once it was time to start.

View of Deck 4

Behind the bar area

The class was taught by........I'm sorry, but I can't even begin to tell you. I know it was three female CMs, and at least one was from Palo or Remy and she kind of led the class. I can't even remember which kinds of champagne these were! Needless to say, considering I took no notes about the details of either beverage seminar, I think you can tell which we enjoyed more.

That little green, white and black smidge behind the glasses is some panna cotta, made to go with one of the drinks. As it was chocolate, we didn't sample it.

You'll notice we only have 4 glasses of champagne - the 5th was poured right before we drank it: Moet Ice Imperial. According to the CMs, it's the first and only champagne every designed to be served over ice, so they waited to pour our glasses until it was time to drink it (considering each glass came with a description).

Now I remember this one, because it was DELICIOUS! I like my drinks really cold so I loved this one

Overall we enjoyed the Champagne tasting, but won't be going to it again (unlike Mixology). Maybe we'll revisit this when we're older and have theoretically more sophisticated palates!

After drinking, we wanted to try out Satellite Falls, the much-lauded adults only area at the very front of Deck 14, and one of the few things exclusive to the Fantasy (ie not found on the dream). No photos as we were prepared to be swimming but I have to say, we weren't enormous fans. It was crazy windy and the water in the "falls" was FREEZING. We did lay out under the awning for a little bit (well, Kevin read some comics and I napped), but decided we much preferred the heated adult pool a few decks below.

What's that? It's been 3 1/2 hours since we ate?! Quick, to the lunch buffet! I feel it's prudent to mention that Cabanas also has a carving station, fruit buffet, dessert selection, and a rotating dessert like cobbler or ice cream that we never visited, and so you will never see photos of them.

I know I don't need to tell you what's going on here, nor who's plate this is

A bit of fish, pizza (duh), sweet potato fries, sauteed mushrooms, and pork fried rice. This, my friends, is why I love buffets.

And how can you argue with this view?! Ugh, what would I give (if I could liveee out ON these waters.....)

After lunch, we decided to explore more of the ship. One of the places I especially wanted to get to was the Outlook Cafe, inside the forward funnel (since the ships only need one funnel to function, the forward funnel contains Edge on "Deck" 13 and Outlook on "Deck" 14, the tippy top!)

I loved the artwork in the stairwells around the ship - this is in the aft stairwell as you make your way to Goofy's Sports Deck - what themeing! (Same with a portrait of Ratatouille as you make your way to Palo/Remy, and other like-themeing around the ship)

We soon realized that the only way we would be able to get up to Outlook would be by elevator, and only the Midship elevators at that - the only access by stairway seemed to be through the Edge club, and since there was no open house at that time, we couldn't enter. Not only that, but there was only ONE elevator in Midship that actually went up to Deck 14! Needless to say, waiting for that one specific elevator took awhile, but finally it arrived, and slowly we were taken upstairs.....

The elevator doors opened and - Outlook was closed for a private function. Dangit!

We ended up waiting another looooong time for the elevator to come back up to get us. I took a picture to commemorate the moment that the elevator made its way up to us.

And an elevator selfie! The screens in the back show previews of that night's show, as well as highlights from the Navigator

We decided to reward our trek around the ship (shhhhh.....) with some hard-earned ice cream, then went downstairs to poke about the shops some more.

Probably one of my favorite pieces of art from the ship. Man oh man what I wouldn't give to have this in my home. (And with the themeing - this is on your way to the Walt Disney Theatre!)

The screen outside the theatre showed video clip previews of that night's show

We did some more shop-browsing, and then headed over to the D Lounge, where a cooking demonstration on the delicious sea bass I had ordered at Enchanted Garden the night before was being held.

The chef in question was pulled down from Remy, so we were in for a bit of a treat, as told by the Entertainment CM who kind of led the demonstration

Funnily enough, this is NOT the exact meal I had the night before! The sauce or 'glaze' is different. However, when you look up menus to Enchanted Garden online, this is the version of the fish posted. Maybe the chef was trying something different with us in the dining room?

Regardless, we were taught how to make the fish (which.....um.....I can't remember) and all given a small sample. Another CM came around offering a wine pairing - FOR FREE! Take note of free booze on the cruise friends, it's few and far between.

After the cooking demonstration, there wasn't anything else on the Navigator that jumped out at us, so we decided to head back to our stateroom and enjoy some of the leftover beer from beach Club on our verandah.

The obstructed view verandah was awesome for allowing my Irish-Scottish husband a chance to sit outside without burning.

The chairs were pretty comfy too!

I can't begin to explain how relaxing it was to just sit out there, stare at the ocean, and just chat with my new spouse. The ultimate vacation as far as I'm concerned.

Total bliss.

I just let out a contented sigh at your last few pictures. I've not yet been on a cruise, but the way you describe it makes me feel as though I were there (including the relaxed, blissful feeling). :)

For some reason, I wasn't getting notifications, but dear god, your TR is really making me want to take a cruise for our honeymoon! We're leaning toward it anyway, so I'll just show DF this part once he gets his butt down here ;) That's awful that the CMs laughed at Kevin on your first night, though :( I'm glad it got better after that!

Especially compared to running around WDW like crazy (even crazier than usual thanks to all the wedding shenanigans) we were totally living on blissful island time. It was infinitely relaxing, even for Kevin (who describes himself as "noth the kind of person to just sit on the beach").

I HIGHLY recommend a honeymoon cruise, like I said above it was just sooooo relaxing compared to the parks, and so romantic to be alone after entertaining friends and family for over a week. It was truly the perfect honeymoon!!

I love at sea days!! They are just so peaceful it looks like you guys really enjoyed it! and that sea bass is so amazing I love it! and that demo looks like fun and plus on the freeze booze! can't wait to hear more and I am jealous of your guys verandah it looks amazing! :goodvibes

Cruise Day 3 Continued

After some time out on the verandah, we went inside to change for our show & dinner with the intention of going to Skyline to start burning through my passport. Walking into Skyline at 5:30, we were again one of the only people there, and the whole bar staff shouted "Hey Michelle and Michel!" In retrospect, it's very sweet they remembered us and the whole Michelle incident, but at the time we felt a little uncomfortable being virtually the sole focus of their attention. It definitely affected how often we went to Skyline.

Another Catalan for me, and a shot of Johnnie Walker for Kevin

Once we finished our drinks, we headed down to the Walt Disney Theatre for that evening's show, Wishes. The plot follows three high school friends on a senior class trip to Disneyland, and how they use the magic of Disney to guide them on this transition from graduating and growing up. If that sounds a little cheeseball to you......it was. We did enjoy it, and the performers were quite talented and the numbers well done, but the cheese factor definitely docked it and placed it behind Aladdin.

Once the show was over we still had over an hour before dinner, so we decided to head back to Europa for a drink! I promise we're not alcoholics!

The back seating area of La Piazza - you can see the late night snack buffet behind me in the mirror reflection (currently empty)

For a change of pace we headed into Ooh La La for a glass of champagne (while Kevin had beer from O'Gills).

Just as populated as Skyline....

I......don't know what this is. Champagne drink!

The drink was yummy enough, but Ooh La La with it's overabundance of pink and plushness wasn't really for either of us. We finished our drinks pretty quickly and wandered around the atrium before the doors to Royal Court opened to let us in.

The first night at every new restaurant a slew of servers would wait at the entrance to lead guests to their tables, since none of us knew where our assigned table was yet. We approached the entrance of the restaurant, and there was Alfredo! He recognized us instantly and offered me his arm to "escort the lady to your table". So dapper! I forgot menu pictures tonight, though thanks to the internet I can find what we ordered.

Now, if they sold this in the shops I would have bought one in a hot second!

Kevin's starter: Breaded and Deep Fried Brie with an Orange and Cranberry Chutney. He didn't touch the chutney and said the brie basically tasted like a fancy mozzarella stick. Therefore it passed the test!

As for me, I had been planning my appetizer for months now-

Escargots Gratinés - Herb-marinated Snails with Finely Chopped Mushrooms, topped with Garlic Butter and Breadstick

Kevin did not try one, but I thought they were delicious! Garlicky and buttery and something I would definitely order again. Using the breadstick to mop up the extra butter was the highlight for sure.

By far, Royal Court was my favorite restaurant in terms of decor. It was so elegant and classy, and reminded me of the Titanic (even though, being on a cruise ship, we didn't exactly want to think of the Titanic!)

I chose to order a soup as well, the Potage Parmentier - Potato and Leek Soup

I was really missing potato soup when I ordered this, but I wish I had gone with the French Onion Soup like I originally planned, as this was just ok. Not mind blowing, definitely still delicious, but mostly just ok

Aaaaaand our entrees!

Kevin's Chateaubriand-Roasted Filet Steak - Roasted Filet Steak, Crushed New Potatoes with Shallots, Buttered Green Beans, Red Wine Jus and a Bernaise Sauce on the Side (I see no bernaise so I suspect he nixed it). He really liked his meal, even the vegetables! The first real knock out of the park for Kevin, he said it was cooked very well

My Crispy Roasted Duck Breast with Cabbage, Bacon and Shallots, Honey Parsnip Puree, and a Duck Red Wine Jus. I ordered this mostly because well, when the heck am I going to be brave enough (and pay for) duck in the real world? The duck itself was pretty good, but I wasn't a fan of the cabbage accompaniment, enough that it kind of killed the dish and we declared Kevin's the best entree of the night. Next time!

After 3 courses, I was stuffed, but Alfredo dropped the dessert menus on our table and I knew I had to go for the 4th course.

Grand Marnier Souffle infused with fresh Orange Zest and served with Grand Marnier Creme Anglaise. This was freaking HEAVEN above. If I wasn't about to burst the zipper on my dress I would have ordered two. So light, so creamy, so delicious so - just so everything.

Alfredo came by to give his personal recommendation that if we were planning a night in Palo, the Pirate menu (tomorrow night) or the Prince & Princess (the night after) were his recommendations to skip, but we assured him we were planning 7 nights in the main dining room. And with that, we bid him goodnight and wobbled out of the restaurant.

As I've mentioned, every night we went right back to the room to change, and usually being that we were in our cabin prompted us to just go to bed. But being that I had just had all 4 courses for the first time, I wanted to walk it off a bit, so I suggested we go up top and explore the ship at night, which we hadn't seen yet.

Oh man people, if you think the Fantasy is gorgeous during the day, just wait till the sun goes down! We were in awe, we couldn't stop photographing the place

They were showing some kind of football game, as you can tell

No one in the pool at 9:30pm either!

Walking through the thankfully dry AquaLab

The adult pool - that's the waist deep section in the foreground, then the deeper area, then finally the ankle deep pool with bar :)

We went back up to Satellite Falls, and it was WINDY! I don't think I've ever felt wind that strong before. Why were we are the top of the ship you ask?

Kevin had to 'King of the World'! If you look at his back, you can see how high the back of his shirt was pulled up - THAT'S how windy it was up there!

It was so completely surreal to be up there - being in the middle of the ocean, near no islands meant there was not a single prick of light anywhere that didn't come from the ship - I don't even remember seeing a moon. Just nothing but pure blackness staring out from all angles. It was actually a tiny bit scary, and made me want to stay away from the edges!

THAT'S where Edge is, with the Outlook Cafe above it - lucky tweens!

Given the wind we decided to head back down to our stateroom. As we were walking down the hall in Deck 7, we ran into Okta. She immediately lit up when she saw us and started giggling "I made a mess!" We didn't really know what she meant, but she followed us down the hall and then we opened our stateroom door.

"Surprise!" she shouted. We were so touched that she went through all that effort to surprise us and arrange the petals, just because we were honeymooning! She was just the sweetest little woman.

We gently cleaned the bed off - Kevin was NOT allowed to punch these towel animals! - and settled in for our nightly tradition of an On Demand movie before passing out. We needed to sleep well tonight - the next morning was our first port, St Maarten!

Oh my gosh... deep fried brie. :hyper: That looks/sounds SO GOOD. Royal Court really does make me think of Titanic! It looks really pretty. I'm glad to hear that Kevin didn't punch your special honeymoon swan towel animals. Haha.

I'm looking forward to seeing your port update and pictures!

Oh my gosh, how sweet is that with the rose petals?! Also, Jeff is obsessed with the Grand Marnier souffle. To the point that he was raving about it so much on our last cruise that our server brought him one on a later night of the cruise in a totally different restaurant because he loved it so much. To the point that I showed him a picture of your souffle and said "Look, it's your BFF." I prefer the chocolate souffle at Palo, but maybe I need to try the Grand Marnier one again in December just to make sure...

All your pictures make me really want to do a cruise with DF! I'm going to have to work on him a bit ;)

It was good! At least I'm told - I wasn't allowed to sample this one ;)

I feel like I've made Kevin sound so aggressive with the towel animals! I promise it was all in good fun! But yes, the swans were spared and gently unrolled.

To me, this is our Palo souffle, since I don't eat regular chocolate. It was utterly outstanding. Probably the best dessert of the whole cruise (I reserve the right to change my opinion if my photos remind me otherwise ;) ) I'm also a little bummed I didn't get to try the Creme Brulee this night, so I might order both next time - if I get two desserts you can too!

All your pictures make me really want to do a cruise with DF! I'm going to have to work on him a bit ;)

You've got plenty of time! It's truly an amazing experience :)

Tuesday October 21 - Cruise Day 4 (St Maarten)

Land ho! We awoke on St Maarten day already in port, and ran out onto our verandah to check out the view.

Not exactly scenic!

All Ashore time was 8:00am, so we quickly got ourselves ready and headed up to Cabanas for breakfast. Unlike our sea days, Cabanas was completely packed, and far more crowded. Oddly enough, the CMs were no longer serving us at the buffet, and all food/drink stations were once again self serve. At the time I thought it was because everyone and their cat was trying to get off the ship at the same time, but everything remained self serve for the rest of the cruise, so I assume they figured no one on our ship had Ebola!

My plate - all repeats/self explanatory. I grabbed the waffles because the Mickey Waffles had been so good the morning before - but these were NOT the same. I was sorely disappointed. Sadly there were no Mickey Waffles on the buffet this morning.

Since I had already been to St Maarten years ago with my family, I had an idea of what I wanted Kevin to see during our day there - namely Maho Beach (the small beach directly under the landing path for incoming planes flying into St Maarten), as well as spending some time shopping around Marigot on the French side (and visiting Sarafina's Bakery!) We determined the best option for us would be the highly-praised Bernard's Tours, which gave us time in both spots and wasn't focused solely on being at a beach (which Kevin wasn't interested in).

We headed off the ship to the tourist center, to check into our tour.

The two ships in port with us - the Carnival Sunshine & Norwegian Getaway

The sticker denotes us going on the #1, aka non-beach tour - they have an option #2 which takes you to Orient Beach as well

We waited for awhile as they started loading up vans for the #2, which was far more popular, before they called over the small group of us that had signed up for #1 and we were loaded into our van. We shared a van not unlike the ones we took to Epcot for our wedding day with some passengers from the Norwegian ship as well as a Carnival ship that was in port, plus one family from the Fantasy. It made the drive interesting as we all got to compare ships along the way!

We set off around the island, with our driver telling us facts and history about St Maarten and it's two-nation heritage. One thing we didn't realize being involved with the wedding was that the island had just been directly hit Hurricane Gonzalo the week before, and the island was still in the midst of cleaning up - according to our guide the island's economy is 100% dependent on tourism, so the longer it took to restore the damage, the worse off everyone would be.

We drover over to Oyster Pond, where we were let out to take some photos of the scenery - in the distance our guide pointed out St Barts.

(Not St Barts - just more of St Maarten)

Several people stayed out to take more photos, but we went back in the van to cool off - it was HOT! - and a few of us decided to crack open the cooler of complimentary refreshments. Included with the tour was bottled water, soda, beer, and a "rum punch" that I'd read had quite the kick to it. A couple people grabbed waters, but Kevin decided to go right for the beer!

He thought the taste was like a Corona, but was shocked to see it was 5.2%! He appreciated the beer even more just for that.

Once the last people piled back into the van, our guide noticed Kevin had started in on the alcohol, and said "I like your style my man!" It was only then that we took a look at the time - it was only 9:30am!! We all had a laugh about that, and a couple other passengers decided to join him in the spirit. You really forget about time on the cruise!

We continued driving around the island, snapping photos while our guide pointed out fun facts and things we wouldn't have otherwise noticed.

Things like iguanas!

Unfortunately, because of the hurricane damage we got stuck in some horrendous traffic on our way to Marigot. When there's only really one main road around the island, and a powerline is down over it, there's nothing else you can really do but wait. Thankfully everyone in our van understood the delay was literally an act of nature, and we passed the time talking about our cruises so far and hearing about life on the island from our guide.

There was a fun retired British couple from the Norwegian ship, and as the husband said he was a bartender back home he designated himself bartender of our cooler and started passing out the rum punch. Since it was about 10:30 by this point, I joined in!

It was yummy and sneakily strong!!

About 15 minutes later, we finally made it to Marigot. Our guide informed us that because of the delay, we would only have 30 minutes in the city instead of the advertised 60 minutes, otherwise we wouldn't make it to Maho Beach in time to see the biggest plane of the day, the KLM 747 from Amsterdam landing, which was not to be missed.

With less time than we planned, we headed across the street to Sarafina's Bakery so I could try some of their famous goods! They had a sign up at their register saying 1 USD = 1 Euro, so thankfully we didn't have to worry about our lack of Euros and could just pay with the cash we had.

Two macarons and an apple tart thing - all were outstanding! The macarons though took the cake by far, I wish I had just stuck to those!

I had hoped to walk up to Fort St. Louis (where my family had tons of pictures from our previous trip, and somewhere I thought history-buff Kevin would love) but because of the delays we didn't have enough time. So instead we wandered around the open air market near where our van was parked, not wanting to stray too far.

Sorry fort!

We browsed for souvenirs but decided not to buy anything - the only things we were mildly interested in weren't worth just being tucked away on a shelf somewhere. Pretty soon our half hour was up and we went back to the lot to continue onto Maho Beach.

As we drove by the bay, some of the storm's destruction was impossible to miss - boats were literally up on land.

We once again approached the French-Dutch border on the island, and our guide slowed as much as he could to tell us about how the two countries agreed to share the island ages and ages ago.

The monument commemorating the day

A little while later we grinded to a halt in more traffic again, this time in view of Maho Beach. Because the KLM plane coming in is such a big attraction, so many different taxis and tour groups were dropping people off at the same time. Our guide inched us closer and closer before finally dropping us off and telling us to rendezvous at the casino next door in 45 minutes, and that we were welcome to head into the casino if we got too hot.

Some people had brought towels and bathing suits, but not thinking ahead we were wearing sneakers, so we decided to trek over to the Sunset Bar & Grill on the beach to grab a drink and wait for the plane to land. As we walked over through the sand I was seriously regretting not wearing flip flops - the water looked so good!

The plane was about half an hour away, so the bar was absolutely packed. The only spots left that had views of the beach were in the sun, and so we sucked it up and staked out our spot for the landing.

Talk about PACKED

A small plane or two flew in, but they weren't anything special. Kevin was impressed, but having been to Maho Beach before I knew the real show was coming. And then, the KLM arrived....

It was insane!! Kevin was beside himself that they even allowed people on the beach when the planes land that close. There was lots of cheering and claps all around, and mercifully for us hoards of people started to leave, so we were able to get a seat under the shade.

Sitting down meant we had to order something, and since food was free on the ship we decided to just pay for drinks (yes, more drinks!)

My strawberry daiquiri - it made me miss the superior drinks on the Fantasy!

Kevin and his Presidente - which he did not like nearly as much as the Carib

Now that more people had left, we were able to move to a place where we could watch the planes yet still be in the shade.

The heat was getting to us, so we decided to walk over to the casino to cool down and take advantage of hopefully slightly nicer bathrooms then the ones at the beachside restaurant. The casino was dark and cool and one big room, with a few machines dispersed around and a giant wall of TVs showing various games (that I assume you could bet on). Kevin ran into the restroom, and I saw this which, coming from the US, amused me to no end.

After I took that photo I happened to turn around and catch the eye of a security worker - and BOY did she give me an evil eye! She was shaking her head at me, so no more photos from inside the casino! We relaxed in some of the chairs and looked at the machines (not 100% believing they were totally OK with us being there and not playing) before it was time to head back to the familiarity of our van.

Once everyone had returned to the van we continued our drive counterclockwise around the island, towards the direction of the cruise ship port, and snapping a few pictures along the way. Our next destination was Simpson Bay Marina, usually full of yachts and other ships as our guide explained it was one of the largest lagoons in the Caribbean and therefore one of the safest places for ships to wait out a hurricane. Unfortunately, this storm was one of the rare instances they weren't as sheltered, and there was still a fair number of boats that were damaged by Gonzalo.

We continued our drive all the way to the top of a large hill where we pulled off the road and got out to take photos. Your could see the marina and airport we had just left, as well as Anguilla in the distance

I don't think you can see Anguilla very well in the photo, it's north of St Maarten

It was super bright!

We didn't spend too long out here, as we were all getting fairly anxious to return to port, especially those who had swam at Maho Beach and were now sitting in a wet van. A few minutes later we turned the corner and saw the most beautiful site!

There's our ship!

We drove through Phillipsburg and came up to the cruise terminal, where every passenger in the van needed to show photo ID & boarding pass before they would let our van on the dock. We parked back where we all began and piled out one last time, thanking our guide for a fantastic day. We loved our experience, it was exactly what we wanted out of our day on St Maarten, and at $40pp for a 5 hour tour including drinks (both alcoholic and not) it was a fantastic deal! We'd book them again in a heartbeat.

We wandered around the shops a bit debating purchasing a souvenir or something duty free (Kevin was tempted by 1.75ML of Johnnie Walker Black for $50!) before the growling in our stomachs got to us and we headed back towards the Fantasy in search of food. It was nearing 2pm, and Kevin hadn't eaten since breakfast!

Simply stunning - the Fantasy is just such a beautiful ship

We went through Fantasy security and ran straight up to deck 11 for some lunch!

Chicken caesar wrap, broccoili, I want to say some kind of mushrooms or Chinese food, regular pasta & gnocchi (the green ones) and steak fries. The pasta was PHENOMENAL and it was nice to have a different kind of french fry after the standard ones on the pool deck.

Hunger satisfied, we debated whether or not we wanted to return to the island (we still had another 4 1/2 hours in port). However, since we would have needed to pay for a taxi to get anywhere, we decided to just stay onboard and enjoy the slightly-less crowded ship.

Next post: An afternoon in the spa and Pirate Night!

I have to say, just seeing the picture of that packed beach made me uncomfortable! Haha. I'm amused by the cigarette machine too... but even more so by the fact the lady gave you the stink eye just for taking pictures of it! I guess they're concerned about protecting state secrets or something. :lmao:

How was staying onboard during the latter half of the port? I think if we go on a cruise, I might consider skipping most of a port to stay on the ship with fewer people there!

I don't know WHAT is so taboo about taking a photo of the vending machine?! Do they have secret St Maarten nuclear codes or something? :lmao:

My next post is about the rest of our day onboard the ship, but spoiler alert: we loved it. I think some ports (Nassau comes to mind) not as many people get off the ship, but I've heard especially Castaway Cay the ship is totally dead. They definitely cut down on the amount of scheduled activities/events being offered by the staff, but if you just want to enjoy the pool/spa, common areas with less crowds it's a great option.

I'm loving your honeymoon TR so far!
It's getting me more and more excited for my trip in April!
And it's making me think about going on another sailing that goes to St. Maarten!
That plane is so cool!
I showed my DF and he freaked!

As if you don't have enough to be excited for in April! Maho Beach is definitely a sight - I think I read somewhere there's actually a shorter runway in the world, but I don't know if the planes land that close anywhere else!

Cruise Day 4 Continued

We decided that this afternoon would be the perfect day to try out our 1-Day Rainforest Room pass, with the theory that on a port day the spa would be less crowded. We went back to our stateroom to get into our bathing suits (the Rainforest Room is co-ed & requires suits) and being that we were going to the spa, I didn't take my phone, but I'm going to borrow photos from the internet to give you an idea of our time.

We checked in at the Senses Spa and gave up our one day passes. We left our Key to the World cards with the attendant in return for a wristband that would give us access to the Rainforest Room, and we were led inside and directed to the locker rooms to store our stuff.

We headed to the showers first to try all the different experiences - by far my favorite one was Tropical Thunder, which had warm rainwater and lighting effects that would flash with thunder. Pretty much the entire spa (we saw maybe 20 people during our time in the Room) was avoiding the Cool Mist Experience, it was pretty cold! We made sure to try them all though.

Since we were already wet, we decided to try one of the hot tubs, because we noticed one was open. We headed past the famous tile loungers (not a single one empty) and into the gorgeous hot tub.

What we didn't realize is inside the hot tub the seating is contorted like the loungers to lie comfortably, and there were little jets all the way down where your legs would lie. It was utterly and completely blissful. The other hot tub was unoccupied, and facing the big glass wall in front of us it was literally like we had our own private spa and no one else was there, even with our still-blegh shipping yard view (the same view as our verandah - would have been better on the open ocean!)

We spent at least twenty minutes in the hot tub before deciding we were pruned enough and it was time to explore the rest of the spa. We walked by the tile loungers again (still no vacancies) and decided to try out the saunas.

Next to the showers (behind me if I were taking the above picture of the showers) were the three saunas, two "wet" and one "dry" (I didn't know there were different kinds!) We walked into the two wet saunas and almost instantly walked right out - it was suffocatingly hot in there. We tried our luck with the dry sauna and found it much more enjoyable, being that it was a dry heat with no humidity. We relaxed and dried up a bit, just enjoying the view from the floor to ceiling window on the far end.

As long as there was a layer of towel between wood and skin (Kevin's back found out the hard way) it was an immensely pleasant place to relax and dry off from our hot tub soak. Pretty soon we were just slightly damp, and we decided to head out and enjoy the adult pool (which is directly next to Senses Spa) since we were already down there and in our suits. We exchanged our wristbands for our KTTW and were told we were welcome back at any time that day. We vowed to return, but never did! For $16, we both thought it was an excellent value, and I didn't realize that there was other areas we could have explored that were included as well! We'll definitely be doing this again - we spent about 45 minutes total in the Room.

We spent another half an hour swimming and yes, having some drinks by the pool. It was noticeably more crowded than earlier in the day, as we were getting closer to All Aboard time and especially the first dinner seating at 5:45pm. There were enough people in the pool that we just staked out our spot along the edge and relaxed. Once we became uber prunes, we decided the time had finally come to try the AquaDuck! We ended up waiting about 20 minutes in line (not as long as some people on sea days) and it ended up being the only time we rode that cruise. It was fun, and something we'll probably do at least once every cruise in the future, but not a repeat ride. Kevin was disappointed we didn't go out further over the edge of the ship. After our ride, we grabbed an ice cream cone for the road and headed back to our stateroom to shower off and watch some more Halloweentown (this time the third one).

The "show" for the evening was a special showing of the film 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day' (it had just been released the week before) which we had no interest in seeing, so we decided to go up on deck to watch us sail out of port later in the evening and take our time getting ready for Pirate Night.

Around 6:15pm, we headed up to Deck 13 to watch the sailing out. The sun had just set and seeing the island all lit up was beautiful.

We headed over to the Currents bar to grab a sail-away/pre dinner beverage, and I was delighted to see they had the Moet Ice which I'd sampled at the champagne tasting and I got one to go. This ended up being my only glass of the cruise though - when Kevin looked at the receipt it was something outrageous like $13 for my little glass. Oops! It was mighty tasty though.

At 6:45, we silently began to slide away from the port. The Norwegian and Carnival ships had already left, and we could see them in the distance also making their way to St Thomas (as well a 4th ship)

We headed back to our stateroom to assemble our pirate gear - some people go all out with costumes and while that sounded like fun, one costume per trip is more than enough for Kevin, so we just wore the provided Pirate Night bandanas, though I did change into my most tropical and pirate-y dress!

Spending the day in the sun, the heat, and all the on and off adult beverages was starting to get to us and put us both in a really silly mood. We had half an hour before the Pirate show out on the deck, and so we set off for our favorite activity in the meantime - exploring the ship!

Pirate character meet & greets we weren't doing

We started with Deck 5 so we could visit the Onboard Bookings desk - I knew the cheapest way to cruise Disney was to book a future cruise while you're still onboard. We sat down with a CM and priced out a 4-nighter in August, because we knew we wouldn't be able to vacation outside of the summer thanks to my job (who gave special exception to the wedding/honeymoon). Sadly, thanks to peak season, even an Inside stateroom for a 4-nighter was more expensive than our Verandah room for 7-nights. We couldn't swallow that price and decided to pass.

On the other side of Deck 5 we found another interactive portrait - this time you could steer a ship inside the painting!

Other than this, there's not much to Deck 5 besides the kids clubs, so we once again returned to the shops.

Remember how I said we were feeling silly?

After this, we went up to Deck 12 in hopes of watching the Pirate show from a similar spot as our Sail Away party spot. Unfortunately, it was less than 10 minutes before the show time, and all the railings on Deck 12 were totally packed. We ended up squeezing in basically on top of one of the follow-spotlight operators, who for his credit actually offered us to stand within his personal bubble when he saw we didn't have anywhere to go.

See? Totally invading his bubble!

The show itself was like the Sailaway Party - cute, but not necessary to do again. I will however see it next time I'm on the Magic or Wonder, since I know a few things are different on the Classic ships vs the newer ones.

By the time the show was over, it was time to head right down to dinner! We were back in Animator's Palate again, though because it was Pirate Night we had a different menu, as well as some pretty cool pirate artwork on the multiple screens throughout the place.

Feeling pirate-y!

The menu, for your pleasure:

Alfredo and Victoria came by in a jiffy (in jaunty pirate costumes!) and we had our orders ready to go. We both skipped the soup/salad course, but both got appetizers:

Kevin's Pirates Golden "Pot Stickers" - Oriental Pork "Dumplings" deep fried and served with a Tamarind-Ginger Soy Sauce and Pickled Vegetables. I don't think he would have ordered these if we hadn't eaten at Ohana, but he did and they were OUTSTANDING! Incredibly flavorful and we loved them.

My Black Beard's Jumbo Crab Cake with a Golden Raisin-Carrot and Coconut Slaw served with a spicy Calypso Dressing. This was all right, but after having Kevin's pot stickers I knew I made the wrong choice. His totally won!

We inhaled these, and with no soup/salad to follow, the entrees came next.

Kevin's Castaway Chicken Breast, rubbed with Pirate Island Spice, Rice and Beans and Fried Okra on a rich Spiced Glaze. He thought it was good - not blow you out of the water awesome, but not bad by any means

My Jack Sparrow's BBQ Marinated Beef Short Ribs - rubbed Beef Short Ribs with Tamarind-Barbecue Sauce served with Onion Red Bliss Mashed Potatoes and Plantain Chip. I honestly think I ordered this mostly for the potatoes, but I'm so glad I did - the beef was so delicious! It fell apart under my fork and the BBQ sauce was so good, much tastier than anything I've had back home.

The pirate menu gets a lot of bad rap on the internet, but for us the pot stickers and my beef made it a must do on our next cruise. We certainly liked it a lot more than other menus (like tomorrow night's....)

We decided to pass on dessert, but before we could dart out of the dining room yet again Alfredo came over and set up a riddle for us, and said once we figured it out, we could leave.

The object was to figure out how to get the butter outside the box of crayons, but you could only move two crayons and it had to retain the same shape (the field goal). We literally could not figure it out - I think we were staring at these crayons for at least 15 minutes before Alfredo came back and did the stupidly easy solution. I won't spoil it for you though!

The grand finale of the night, the pirate night fireworks, didn't start till 10:30, so once we were done with dinner we had plenty of time to kill. We decided to head down to Europa so I could get another drink off my Skyline passport, though rather than have Kevin get a beer and bring it to my bar I brought my martini to O'Gills.

Pirate beer! Not really, just regular beer in a pirate bandana.

After our drinks, we opted to go back to our rooms to wait out the fireworks, where this guy was waiting -

Chocolate coins for Pirate Night instead of Sleepy Chocolates!

Kevin was exhausted from our crazy long day and wanted to skip the fireworks, but I insisted we go. I dragged him up to Deck 12 with the promise that we would camp out next to the stairway to Cabanas so we could see the fireworks, then I could take a peek at the Pirate Night buffet (yes, more food!) and we could go to bed. He reluctantly agreed and we headed up to Deck 12 via the Forward staircase, closest to our room.

Well, our plan was moot, as they had already sectioned off half the deck for fireworks fallout and we couldn't go any further. The other side of the ship was totally packed, so there was nothing we could do but wait it out.

Unfortunately, this meant we were behind the show going on out front, and so we missed most of the lead up to the fireworks. I think Jack Sparrow was involved. But about 15 minutes later....

They aren't at all like the ones in the parks, it's a much smaller scale, but they're still pretty cool! At this point even I was getting tired and I definitely didn't feel like battling the crowds to get to the other end of the ship for crepes and other buffet goodies, so I gave up on the nightly buffet (next time!) and we headed back down to our room to sleep. Tomorrow was St Thomas day, or for us St John's day!

The pirate menu looks good (we missed it for Remy) and I love Kevin's Flash tshirt! Kevin looked so pirate-y and intense steering the ship. I'm going to miss the fireworks when we sail Alaska next year... But we get Alaska scenery so win some, lose some.

Pirates Night looks so fun! You guys look so cute. And I couldn't solve the crayon puzzle either. It sucks you didn't get to try one of the tile loungers. I've always wanted to try one of those! Glad to hear that you think the day pass was worth it, though. I'm taking mental notes from your TR to plan our first cruise one of these days. ;)

Wow, amazing honeymoon up to now. It looke like you guys were having a blast. The pirate night looks so fun. I never been on a cruise because I get seasick really easily and am scared that I will feel ill on the entire trip. However, your pics are tempting me to try one. Who know maybe one day I will sum up enough courage to try it out but for now keep the pics coming. I am living vicariously through you:thumbsup2

Hi! I just read your whole thread in the last few days and must say I love everything you guys did! You were a beautiful bride and you and your hubby make such a cute couple! I cried through your video lol!
BTW I loved your bouquet.:flower1:
Best wishes for many happy years together!
