A couple points...Don’t worry I know. But you never shy away at poking fun at the world’s game.
I’m used to being made fun of for liking the sport. I wasn’t built as a quarterback, but soccer can really be played in different ways by all people at any skill level. I love multiple sports but many people that root for team USA this World Cup will be the same people that complain that Sports Center will talk about it for more than 5 minutes. Sportscasters and radio hosts still only have minimal knowledge of the sport and that’s honestly pathetic given how much they get paid. England as an example has a one hour local radio show on each of its BBC radio stations. Soccer has already moved into the number 3 spot in terms of popularity (overtaking hockey and tied with baseball in some polls). Yet we soccer fans continue to hear the jokes and frowns about the sport from people who barely watch it. This isn’t meant as a shot towards you just the general North American population. It’s a shame that if we win the World Cup with the youngest team in history, people will make fun of the sport and not even give our domestic leagues a chance. I continuously hear how the women team is better than the men’s team true in terms of talent and World Cup titles, when it’s simply not true. The women’s team is talented but it’s not the same competition compared to the men’s team and what their opposition’s talent is. The women are ahead with WC titles because North America and a few other countries around the world care about women sports. They win based more on their lack of competition rather than their talent level itself. If European nations took women’s sports seriously, the USWNT would not win 99/100 times. My hope for the future is that all countries around the world pay and invest in women sports leagues as much as mens sports leagues. The whole point of the USA hosting in 2026 is to grow the sport and have the media take the sport seriously and equally to the other big four. Soccer deserves the same hour commitment on sports shows as every other sport and not just every 4 years. We have two friendlies coming up In January. How many will watch post WC? MLS starts on February how many will tune in? USL and MLS are expanding next year, how many know if a team is in their hive town/city? We have Nations League in March, will you watch? We have Gold Cup in July, will the general public care? I’m tired of El-Tri fans out numbering USMNT fans everywhere we go in the country. It hurts that in this great country that prides itself in diversity that the USMNT (despite it’s success in the last decade) will always be second to fans of other nations in this country. As the sport grows, I just wish team USA would gain more support permanently instead of having to strategically to play matches around the country. I pray for the day 80,000 USA fans out number opponent fans. It shouldn’t be this hard to show that this team matters and deserves permanent respect and support. So before taking a shot at USA soccer fans, understand it’s hard to get respect in Europe but even harder here in America.
Hopefully they’re blaming themselves instead of crying over a controversial goal in a different match.I would love to see the German locker room right now. Lol.
I have it on good authority that right now they're planning to throw snowballs at Santa Claus.Hopefully they’re blaming themselves instead of crying over a controversial goal in a different match.
First thanks for the thoughtful response. Okay, now to respond.A couple points...
#1) You can't force someone to like a sport (or anything for that matter). Just my opinion, but that's what it seems like you've been trying to do on the board... show people how "great the sport is" and, again in my opinion, it just comes off badly.
#2) You bring up people who only care about the sport every four years, and that's true. But there's also people who only care about NFL when it's time for the Super Bowl. There's only people who care about MLB when it's the World Series, basketball fans who only show up for March Madness. But you don't see the "die hards" bombarding the board asking "are you going to watch the SEC championship today?" and posting upteen youtube videos and twitter posts about the game.
#3) As far as media coverage, the radio and TV programmers (those who pick what shows are on) do so for money. More people WANT to talk football, basketball, baseball. Not as many people are interested in talking about soccer. If they can't get the audience, they're not going to do the show. I'm guessing media in MLS cities at least show some highlights of the teams' games.
#4) Paragraphs are your (and your readers) friends.
#5) I disagree with what you see as the "whole point" of hosting the 26 WC. The "whole point" is to make money. Sure, the organizers will CLAIM they want to grow the sport, get recognition, blah, blah, blah, but the truth is it's about money.
#6) While I agree soccer support is growing, I feel it's at a MUCH slower pace than what you think it is. It will take generations for it to overcome football and basketball.
#7) Your passion for the sport is commendable. Unfortunately, I think you might be hurting your cause as much as you're helping.
Not a wide brush at all... it is directed specifically at the World Cup extremest and no one else."These folks"? Make sure you don't get any on ya with that wide brush you're using. Rofl.
I’m not an extremest. And that’s a little mean to be honest. I enjoy the sport and I’m patriotic about the national team but I’m not a soccer hooligan. Not a wide brush at all... it is directed specifically at the World Cup extremest and no one else.
Then apparently I wasn't talking about you was I?I’m not an extremest. And that’s a little mean to be honest. I enjoy the sport and I’m patriotic about the national team but I’m not a soccer hooligan.
You do, however, seem pretty worked up about a game where grown men spend 90 minutes kicking and head butting a ball back and forth across a field and occasionally (very occasionally) score. Not a wide brush at all... it is directed specifically at the World Cup extremest and no one else.
They hit 20M, when you count streaming and it’s over 20M when Telemundo is added.I saw that the US-Iran match attracted 18 million viewers in the US. Not the 20M they were hoping for but still a record.
Perhaps they’ll hit the milestone today.
Sore loser Uruguay confronts referee after being eliminated.
Then apparently I wasn't talking about you was I?
If you don’t give the sport a chance, I don’t know what to tell you. If you watch the match today, you may see the sport differently. Someone has to lose today. There will be goals. You do, however, seem pretty worked up about a game where grown men spend 90 minutes kicking and head butting a ball back and forth across a field and occasionally (very occasionally) score.
