It's definitely something we want to do in the future. Kids are still a little bit young (well the baby is) and my son-in-law is Danish so they spend every other Christmas there plus my youngest is starting his GCSE year so with all that entails it will likely be 2024 at the earliest but I can still dream (and plan lol).
I've always done our trips like you -separate flights and hotel booking but found myself on the VH site an wow those prices are scary so I thought I'd ask the expert

Flight prices alone are no joke though.
Timing is everything, I agree. And GCSE time is difficult too. We being the terrible parents we are took Kyle out first two weeks of the new term both GCSE years....very much frowned upon of course, but we knew he would catch up easily, and he did. But, I can understand why folks don`t.
Spending Christmas in Denmark sounds beautiful, but you`ll miss them the years they do go there.
You`ll manage it I`m sure when the time is right.
