Joy to the World: an offsite Christmas extravaganza at Disney, Universal & SeaWorld – Dec. 2016 TR

Ah, big decisions to be made by your girl. There's a ton of pressure for our young folks, isn't there?

I knew you'd appreciate the GC pic. It just seemed so fitting ;).

Does she know you refer to her as Grumpy Cat, or is that our little secret here?
She puts most of the pressure on herself and then doesn't handle it all that well. We are currently subjected to the jurrasic sized GC due to the fact that she has 3 final papers due this Friday and then exams.

She does not know that I refer to her as GC. I have called her that right to her face and I got the "oh, ya, that's funny". Oddly though, several of her friends call her Grumpy Bird and even do so on social media. That's perfectly acceptable because it's not coming from me. I think we should keep it as our little secret.....unless of course you are planning my funeral.

Yes, but think of the job security that provies! If they got rid of all the reporting they'd only need 1/3 of the employees .
It wouldn't matter, they would just find other dumb things to do. I swear that there are people sitting in head office, that have no clue what so ever what happens out in the facilities, that do nothing all day but think up new rules or reports. LOL....annually I get a letter from the department that deals with the type of contract I have that states some BS about being responsible to the taxpayers and therefore they can not consider allowing us to increasing our fees. If they were being responsible to the taxpayers they would cut the staff by 1/3. We have not had a fee increase since 2012 but you can bet your butt that they have all had regular raises in that time frame.

The walrus at SLH is actually Bruiser (they keep the 2 walruses over there, and the 2 at Wild Arctic stay there)

Johanna beat me to it; but Gar lives at WA with Kboo (both still have their tusks, and easy to tell apart as Gar is nearly twice the size of Kboo, and Kboo tusks are crossed). Slowpoke and Bruiser live at SL&O; (both have had their tusks removed due to medical reasons...and I cannot tell them apart; because I don't spend much time with them, and are both roughly the same size)

Sometimes the unexpected in a holiday just makes it more enjoyable. Like the delicious breakfast at IHOP and the extra shows you squeezed in at SW. Waiting to see how you got on later with the cruise :goodvibes

We don't generally have a whole lot of spontaneity on our trips.....they're pretty planned out before we ever leave the house......but when we do have one of those impromptu moments, its actually kind of fun. Maybe we should plan to be spontaneous more often? :scratchin

Yay an update! I love the Sea Lion show but I still hate the color scheme they chose for the set. I have such a visceral reaction to it.

Ah yes, all that yellow :crazy2:. Not my favourite colour either, but the show is really great. I loved Pirate Island but this one is pretty fun, too.

I remember those days well. That last run to the finish line is a tough one for impending graduates. So much stress. It all becomes worth it when she walks across the stage to pick up her diploma, though :thumbsup2.

Yep, I can almost guarantee you are spot on there!

Good eye, Joanna! Thanks for the clarification. My word, he's a big guy too!!!

Well shoot. I didn't even notice the absence of the tusks.....I should have known that wasn't Garfield :headache:.

I had no idea that SeaWorld even had that many walruses!!

Well, I am off to work shortly for my second-last retail shift, but I should be able to get a update posted tomorrow. Thursday is my final shift at my "old" new job, then I have a full week off before I start at the bank......so hopefully, your patience and understanding on my turtle-like progress lately will be rewarded with lots of updates beginning this Friday and onward. Heaven knows I have a LOT of time to make up for!

I hope you are all staying cool wherever you happen to be.....the mercury soared to 96 degrees here yesterday. Yep, it was a little hot :scared:. We are making good use of this in the evenings: one of my favourite aspects of our little town home community.....

I'm a summer girl, though, so I'd much rather have this weather :sunny: than the snow and cold of winter.

Expect the next report update sometime on Wednesday!

I agree it would feel worthwhile but she goes to an IB school so commencement isn't until mid October. At that point I doubt she will care. She will be in the thick of the new life away at university.

Well that stinks :(. I would think there will be a lot of kids who won't be able to attend an autumn commencement.

Tuesday, December 20th (continued) :santa:

Arriving back at the resort, we took a few more minutes to catch up on messages and emails in the comfort of the air conditioning before heading back outdoors for our tour of the grounds. While it wasn’t glaringly sunny that day, it was still very warm and quite humid despite the overlay of clouds. We made a point of drinking a bottle of water each as well; dehydration is always a risk when the weather is hot, regardless if its Christmastime or summer. Neither of us were at all hungry…..our rich and indulgent breakfast at IHOP would be plenty to carry us through until dinner that evening…..so lunch of any kind was not necessary.

Slipping back on our shoes, we headed out the door of the villa and down the stairs to the sidewalk. Since we were located on the arm of the resort that was more away from the main amenities, we crossed over the roadway and made our way toward the Village Center. There was a large fountain outside the Welcome Center/check-in building, and lots of red flowers that felt wonderfully festive .

We had visited the Spanish-style courtyard behind the Village Center in the dark on the night of our arrival at the resort, but we hadn’t yet seen it during the daytime. It was equally as beautiful by day as it was all lit up in the evening. The colours all worked together perfectly, and the Christmas tree was truly lovely.

The Village Center pool area was the next stop on our tour. It was big, clean, and felt incredibly “tropical”…..and we were shocked to find it virtually deserted, especially considering the unseasonably warm weather.

In fact, for most of our week, the whole resort felt almost unoccupied . 90% of the guests we saw were seniors toting golf clubs, while young families were almost non-existent. It was nice to have the property be so quiet……there were certainly no disruptive guests to impact our stay in a negative manner…..but being used to the active vibe of the Vistana (where there are a plethora of well-attended activities being held at all hours of the day in various parts of the resort), it was a strange feeling at the same time. We suspected the occupancy was quite low that week, but that surprised us too, since we were literally just days away from Christmas.

15590254_10155301399351416_1097478991962617979_n.jpg

We strolled around the pool area for a bit, admiring how lovely the whole area was. I *loved* the mature palms…….they exude Florida charm…..and the soft colours woven into the décor were very relaxing. A little part of us was sad that we didn’t have a lot of leisure time built into the itinerary, but that was the price we would pay for having so many awesome activities planned for this holiday vacation. Alas, you can’t have it all.

15673045_10155301399721416_2645450922659690739_n.jpg

Adjacent to the main pool was a separate lap pool, which we thought was a great idea on the part of the resort designers. I am sure the serious swimmers appreciated a dedicated space for laps, allowing guests to focus on their fitness while remaining nearby to their families.

15541988_10155301399146416_5003594207368286712_n.jpg

Moving onward from the Village Center pool area, we strolled down the walkway along the water and found more festive trees and holiday décor dotted along the pathway. So pretty.

15578623_10155301399236416_7234644034797750821_n.jpg

Signage along the water reminded resort guests that feeding the alligators was prohibited. I suspect, like at the Vistana, these signs only appeared after the June 2016 death of the toddler at the Grand Floridian :sad1:.

15621876_10155301397986416_3393538039802234279_n.jpg

There was a fabulous, spacious sand volleyball court right along the lake. Again, though.....not a soul in sight :confused3.

15621976_10155301398756416_6224394724166379335_n.jpg

Then, we crossed over the lake to the other side of the resort via the beautiful, sprawling pedestrian bridge.

15219643_10155301398806416_5408052762914089038_n.jpg

More signage on the other side of the resort warned of the risks of alligators and snakes. This is the new Florida norm, I suppose. The same hazards as have always been present, but now everyone is just more aware of them.

15622237_10155301398446416_5519698281322106034_n.jpg

The Vista del Sol pool area greeted us on the other side of the walkway. Spanish-themed fountains, a fort with a splash pad, and a large pool were the centerpieces of this recreational space.

15622594_10155301399806416_6328574185668161735_n.jpg

I can see this space being a HUGE hit with kids. This pool was definitely geared more for families: while the Village Center pool felt relaxing and elegant, this pool had the child-friendly fun factor while still keeping with the resort theme.

There was a large hot tub, as well (in fact, if I remember correctly, I think there might have been two :scratchin). They weren’t particularly secluded but they were a good size and as clean as the rest of the two pool areas.

15672704_10155301398231416_2217865077510033422_n.jpg

The Copa Loca Bar & Grill was conveniently located poolside. The food and beverage options looked great and prices weren’t too crazy, either.

The sun was beginning to peek through the clouds and it really was just a great day for a walk, especially when the resort was so lovely. The areas along the water, especially, were very picturesque and evoked a feeling of relaxation. For anyone looking to escape the hullaballoo of the theme parks, this would be the resort to stay at.

Crossing back over to the main side of the resort, you could see the Grande Vista’s golf course off to the side:

Back near the Village Center, we continued our walk down toward the lighthouse. We discovered a pair of fire pits surrounded by Adirondack chairs, and made a mental note to spend at least one evening out here enjoying a drink and homemade s’mores. I’m sure we could squeeze that in before the end of our trip :thumbsup2.

The Lighthouse turned out to be the Sweetery, a little shop featuring an assortment of chocolate, candies and ice cream. Yum :p.

The adjacent dock offered paddle boats for rent:

15672683_10155301397776416_8420243051034768147_n.jpg

…..and there was a small, covered games area (where we shocking discovered REAL PEOPLE!!! They did exist!!).

15541658_10155301397691416_955653023183327912_n.jpg

We toured around some of the indoor facilities as well, before heading back to the villa. They had a fairly sizeable arcade:

15590273_10155301398411416_996309135042752904_n.jpg

…..and an expansive, modern, well-equipped fitness center.

We wound up our walking tour in pretty much the same place we started….we made our way back through the Village Center courtyard, and back to Galleon building 95.

15621647_10155301398706416_7503628346162671630_n.jpg

We had just enough time left to enjoy a short rest before heading out for our evening plans. Steve stretched out on the couch and was soon snoring away :faint:, while I llounged on the bed and touched base with both Jake and mom by phone. It was nice to have a little down time to relax: especially on such an activity-packed week.

Coming up: our very first visit to Disney’s Beach & Yacht Clubs . Dinner at Beaches & Cream with an EPIC ending is next.

WOW! Thanks for the tour. The resort looks beautiful! I bet you won't have any qualms about staying there again if you can't get into your beloved Vistana!

You know those pics of the MGV are KILLING me. The pools are calling my name right now. With this trip to Quebec coming up and the prospect of a Christmas trip a summer vacay is totally off the table. How will I survive?

There were signs there previous to last year about the gators but it was not that specific. It was something along the lines of 'don't feed the wildlife' or 'beware of the wildlife'. Can't remember exactly but they were there and plenty of them.

That pic of the lap pool almost shows the villa we had last time. We were in the last one on the ground floor at the end of the lap pool. I thought is was going to be a problem with pool noise but we never heard a thing. Which was because no one uses the lap pool. We found that late afternoon a few people would get in it just to float around. In the evening there would be the occasional kid in there but it seemed that no one liked being removed from the action in the big pool.

Well that stinks :(. I would think there will be a lot of kids who won't be able to attend an autumn commencement.
I would guess that approx. half the kids don't attend. A very large number of IB students go to schools outside of the country, which is partially why they take the IB program. Also, they don't get final grades until August so they won't hold the ceremony until everyone has officially graduated.

It might be a good thing that half the kids don't come for commencement because the graduating class is over 400 students.

When I graduated High School (back in 1979) our commencement wasn't until October and that is still the case in the Toronto schools as my nephew graduated 6 years ago and his commencement was in the fall. I guess it is because some kids go to summer school to complete any missed/failed classes and they don't get their marks until after August. It also gives you a chance to meet up with your former classmates in the fall and see how they are doing now.

The lap pool is such an amazing idea! When I'm on vacation, I always find myself rushing to the pool right when it opens in the hope that I can get some laps in before it fills up with kids and floaters (people who float around with sunglasses on because they never put their heads underwater). A lap pool would totally solve that problem. Looks like a beautiful resort!

I also went to school in Toronto and actually forgot that we had commencement in the fall. Of my core group of friends (5 of us and we are still close to this day) not one of us attended the ceremony. We attended for another friend the year before and felt that we had been there done that when it was our turn.

IB as in Internationale Baccalaureate? If so, wow! I had no idea that that was available outside of Europe. I went to an IB school in the UK 15-20 years ago, which was rare at the time (and still is). The programme was offered alongside A-levels (the more traditional qualification obtained by 18 year olds in the UK) which is what I took but a lot of my friends did the IB.

Gina - I can't get over how big the resort was! It looks stunning though and very peaceful.

Hi Gina! Thanks for great pictures of the Marriott Grande Vista. They brought back some nice memories. I stayed there sometime around 2008-2009 with my family, including my parents who have since passed. We had a wonderful stay, and it was very convenient to our primary destination SeaWorld.

We had a fun visit to Universal this past weekend and will head to the Keys for a week starting next weekend. I'm not sure if it's good or bad that our vacations ended up jammed together this Summer!

I went to an IB school in Port Orange, Florida. :) We graduated in June, though.

WOW! I've been gone for a week and missed alot! Congrats on the new job, Gina!! party:

We've been in Orlando and tried out the new attractions! We did the two Pandora rides at Animal Kingdom. Flight of Passage is awesome! We spent a day at Volcano Bay in a cabana- heavenly! We were there on a cloudy, rainy day so the park was pretty empty. The rain was only persistent for about 2 hours- we stayed in the cabana, ate lunch, and relaxed. We were able to do the rides with a minimal wait. The other days we noticed signage that Volcano Bay was closed to capacity. Sometimes some clouds and rain are your friend! And we were by no means washed out by the rain, but blessed with very low crowds! If you guys have any questions about the new stuff, ask away.

Nice pictures of the Grande Vista- we've planned a few stays there, but then plans changes. So, we'll definitely have to try it there sometime!
