Mask mandates being lifted in some places

Where are these places getting the stats? They don't at all match up with what my state has.

My state's monthly positivity is sitting at 5.1% and I'm looking at the stats and there's no way the positivity for 7-day average is 21.5%. All 7-day tracking is showing 5.4% or lower. Orange represents negative, blue represents positive.

Don't pay attention to this stuff. Go to the state's information directly.

I see two possible issues with the way that 20% figure was calculated. First, it appears to be using the number of new tests (by patient) divided by the number of positive tests (by sample). So they're excluding repeat tests from the testing metric, which makes some sense if the point is to measure how available and accepted testing is, but not excluding repeat tests from the results. That skews the ratio. Second, it is using the tests administered in a given day vs. the test results reported that same day, so the rate could be subject to swings based on day-to-day fluctuations in the number of tests administered.

The source I've been using for reliable info for most of the past year (covidactnow.org, a joint project of heath experts at Georgetown, Stanford and Harvard) lists SD's positivity percentage as 5.9%, about middle of the pack, and shows only six states with a rate in the double digits. SD is also third in the nation in vaccination rate right now, so I'd say it really isn't that bad a place to be at the moment.

So then the people who haven’t been vaccinated should be concerned and double triple quadruple their masks but don’t require those vaccinated to still wear it. It’s like what’s the point of being vaccinated if I can never take this thing off.

I think people will stop caring around the end of the year as they seem to already have.

I guess I don't consider not wearing a mask to be a reward for getting the vaccine?

But being vaccinated and still having to wear one is a big reason many are delaying getting, they would rather wait it out and decide later if nothing seems like its going to change for them. Don't have to like the fact but it is happening.

I don't doubt it. I have relatives who refuse the vaccine and refuse face masks. I wish that everything didn't have to have instant gratification attached to it, because this is something that will not be instant. But I soooo wish it were because I hate having to wear masks.

That's because people have a hard time doing things for the greater good. We already know this. The greater good in this case isn't just saying you're vaccinated and all the discussion behind do people vaccinated spread or not. The less you see people wearing masks the less likely you are to wear one. We do not in our country have things we wear saying we're vaccinated or not. Would you like that though so you can walk around and just point and say you're vaccinated I'm not going against a mask mandate? That is one way to do it. And I'm being serious here. It's one way to create this system where people don't just see people lapsing in mask wearing because as everyone puts it they are selfish. Otherwise the more people see people wearing it the greater others will continue to wear it and without knowing who is vaccinated and who isn't you have to assume people around you aren't vaccinated. You live in a place without one but others who do live in places with mask mandates need people to continue to wear masks. We're too early in vaccination efforts at this point.

If we also had our vaccination efforts where everyone who wanted one now got it we might have less of an issue. As you say people who are like "why get one" well then you don't need to be eligible to get it right now. You can go to the back of the line then after everyone else. That's not a mean thing to say. There are millions who want it now, millions who don't need to be convinced and are willing to continue to wear a mask. They should really be the front of the line if we're going to talk about incentives to get vaccinated.

But we know..we do know..people are just not in it collectively for everyone else. If they were then with the way we're doing vaccinations and this far into this pandemic people would say it sucks that I'm wearing a mask after I get vaccinated but I'll do it. If they were then this far into this pandemic people would say I want to get the vaccine now and it will suck that I'll still be wearing a mask but I'll do it.

I received my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Thursday. I have been diligent over the last year, including spending Thanksgiving and Christmas alone. Out of the last 12 months, I have been alone for about seven months. Every day. Most of my friends have received their second dose as of today and in two weeks, we will start visiting again. I will continue to wear a mask in public. I will social distance and I will wash my hands. But, I am going to visit in person with other vaccinated friends without a mask. I have been using common sense to guide me through this very trying time and I will go forward using common sense. If I am vaccinated and my friend is vaccinated, we are going to spend time together, indoors without a mask. Is there a slight risk? Of course. But, everything we do involves some risk.

There, I’ve said it.

I was speaking with one of my sisters this afternoon and she told me she read where Dr. Fauci is highly suggesting to wear our masks into 2022 but I don't have a news source to quote....sorry; just my sister.

I saw that too about masks till 2022. When I signed onto the computer. This is just so insane. Who would have ever thought that the world would have be shut down for almost 2 years if we have to suffer with masks yet another year. This won’t be over till the 12th of never As the songs says and that’s a long long time

The headline and thought that masks are 'highly' recommended until 2022 are misleading.

Fauci answered a reporter's pointed question about masks into 2022.

His answer is not that masks will be highly recommended into 2022.

Washington (CNN)Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that it's "possible" Americans will still need to wear masks in 2022 to protect against the coronavirus, even as the US may reach "a significant degree of normality" by the end of this year.

Asked by CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" whether he thinks Americans will still need to wear masks next year, Fauci replied: "You know, I think it is possible that that's the case and, again, it really depends on what you mean by normality."

The comments from Fauci come as the US Covid-19 death toll approaches 500,000 and the country nears a full year in its fight against the virus. And though the US is now steadily rolling out vaccines to fight the pandemic, the nation's top infectious disease expert underscored the importance of mitigation measures to fight the aggressive virus and its emerging variants as many Americans express pandemic fatigue.

Fauci told Bash that while he can't predict when the US might return to operating as it did before the pandemic told hold, he thinks that by the end of this year "we're going to have a significant degree of normality beyond the terrible burden that all of us have been through over the last year."

Biden administration says 2 million Covid vaccine doses have been delivered after winter storms delay shipments

"As we get into the fall and the winter, by the end of the year, I agree with (President Joe Biden) completely that we will be approaching a degree of normality," said Fauci, who serves as Biden's chief medical adviser.

Mask-wearing is critical to slowing the spread of the virus, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which says they can help protect both the people wearing them and those around them from transmitting the virus.

The Biden administration has been pushing mask-wearing more aggressively than the Trump administration did, with the President signing an executive order last month mandating interstate travelers wear a mask and requiring masks on federal property. Biden also challenged Americans to wear masks for the first 100 days of his presidency to reduce the spread of the virus.

Fauci also weighed in Sunday on suggestions by researchers in Israel in Canada that just one dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was needed to protect against the virus, saying "the science points directly towards continuing with what we know about from the clinical trial," which is that two doses provide the most protection against the virus and the emerging variants.

"We know for sure that when you give a prime with the Pfizer followed by a boost 21 days later that you get a 94% to 95% efficacy and the difference between the level of antibodies after one dose versus two doses is about tenfold higher," he said.

"And that is really important because when you have that high a degree comparable to the single dose alone, that's the cushion that you would like to have when you get a variant that isn't as well-protected against by the antibodies induced by the vaccine, but you have enough level to be able to prevent at least severe disease."
