The Running Thread - 2019

February
33.5 miles
Average 12:13m/m

I am with @flav, this is not a great total but I am thankful for every mile, and I am trying to be thankful for the things that filled my time I had planned to spend running.

As I started to type this (waiting to stop sweating so I can go change back into office clothes), a co-worker asked me if I was being safe by running at this time of year. To be fair, said person is suffering through their first winter with snow. I explained that I am more than willing to skip a run if it is icy or polar vortex weather, but they disagreed with my margin of safety :) I am very thankful that I have an opportunity to run mid-day when it is warmer, and that I have found appropriate gear to make it comfortable to run outside in winter.

Marathon training done, taper time!

February Totals

112.2 miles (counting the 3 miler I'm doing after work)
Average: 10:02 pace
Elevation 2737 ft.

ytd miles: 265 miles

missed a week of running due to illness but I'm gonna breathe in, breathe out, and move on.

February Miles: 77
Average Pace/HR: 14:55/138

January Miles/AP/HR: 83/15:25/135
TOTAL 2019 Miles: 160

I missed almost a week of running this month thanks to the not-flu, so overall happy with my totals. Guess I must have done more speed/tempo work this month since my average pace dropped by thirty seconds from last month!

February 2019
running: 133.0 mi
tennis: 17 hours

The running is a new personal best for a monthly total, by about 6 miles over last month. I've just peaked in my marathon training, so starting to taper this week. The tennis is ramping up as this was our first full month in season, but we've had a number of weather postponements.

Since I managed to aggravate my foot running last night, I'm going to skip tonight's run and might as well go ahead and post my February numbers. February was a weird month, largely because I took 2 weeks off after my 50 miler on the 2nd and then even after that constant rain has limited my running. Here's the summary:

February:
Total Miles - 80.50 (completed in just 6 runs!)
Total Time - 16:12:43
Average Pace - 11:07/mi

I can feel my speed ebbing away since I've been focusing on long, slow runs for the ultras that I've been doing the past couple of months. I think that will continue through at least the end of next month, but I'm going to need to start re-introducing some speed work after that. All in all, though, it's been nice to just enjoy running the long, slow races for completion rather than best time purposes. There's something to be said for just going out at a comfortable pace and not pushing the envelope.

February
Total: 170.52
Pace: 8:57

Answer to old question: I love running! Training is what would get me out at 4am in the freezing cold. But when not training I run almost daily, mostly for sanity. :)

Furthest run: 2348 mi - SF to Maui. You guys put me to shame!

Total elevation: 2,495 m (8,185 ft)
Days run:28(11.2 miles/day)

This was a great month of training! I set personal best for mileage, elevation gain, VO2Max(67), and consecutive days running (36). I’ve been using doubles more, and they’ve been working great. I can feel them on the next run, but 2nd run of the day is always a breeze! It’s also the best way to finish a day :-) Still trying to master the art of pacing though... I’ve gotten better with easy and long run pacing, but I still charge a little too hard on my workouts and it cost me a lot of quality. Luckily I have plenty of workouts left before the goal race to get it right! I’m going to Phoenix on Monday for a work trip, so that will be my new farthest from home I’ve ever run. Hopefully I won’t get eaten by a coyotes...

February Totals:

Miles: 270.2
Avg. Pace: 7:35/mile

I took 3 days off in February. I surprised my oldest son with a quick trip to WDW--didn't run 2 days. It was rainy our 2nd day and I had no desire to go run in the rain. I also took yesterday off. I have been very tired and my legs weren't feeling great. I ran 20 miles on Monday and I think my legs were DONE by Wednesday. My hamstrings and glutes have been so tight and achy and I really feel it on those longer runs. I have logged a lot of treadmill miles--snow, ice, rain, wind, darkness, you name it. I have been taking a pilates class once a week. It is mostly older senior women since it is during the day. I am easily the least flexible person in the class.

And because it's been awhile, here's some pics of my quick trip to WDW. My son had no idea until the morning we left. We were due for some much needed one on one time.

February 2019:
Total miles: 3
Rowing: 67 minutes (6 sessions)

The bright side: I've been getting better about using my rower on weekday mornings, even if I keep lazing about on Saturdays instead of doing something to replace the long runs I've been missing thanks to the weather. Also, I'm actually really proud of that little 3 mile run on the second day of the month; it was the first warm weekend we'd had in ages and the last one we've had since, and it took planning and motivation to take advantage of that tiny window of good weather.

I'm still stressing a bit about the half marathon looming in June, but I've bought enough cold weather gear that I'm ready to finally just go out and run anyway this weekend, for all that Saturday's high is supposed to be -10* F. As long as we don't get so much new snow I can't keep my feet dry on the plowed trails and sidewalks (knock on wood!) I'm going to bundle up and go out there. If we *do* get snow I may put on my boots and just tromp around in the deep snow to be contrary (and because I figure it's decent conditioning in its own way). I'm feeling very motivated today because I finally went into Garmin Connect to add my shoes and add them to past runs, and I had no idea it was gathering so many types of data. Seeing past runs all laid out by that was really motivating!
