The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD furthest from home:
Haha, I first read this as leaving home running... how far did you get? And was all proud of my 20km (13 miles) answer.

The farthest I ran was in Hawaii (different islands, trails and towns). One official race in Waikiki, that is 7900km (4900 miles) from home.

QOTD: What is the furthest (is that even a word?) location you have run from home? Tell is if you like where home is and where the run happened, bonus for approximate mileage.

ATTQOTD: Home is Baton Rouge, LA and Boston, MA is the destination which is approximately 1,585 miles away.

I live in MA. Furthest was WDW which is about 1300 miles. If all goes as planned I am hoping to break that next February when I run the Surf City 1/2 in CA.

ATTQOTD: I live in CT

Furthest for just a run: Orange County, CA 2,497 miles away
Furthest for a race: Castaway Cay 1,120 miles away
Furthest for a timed race: Walt Disney World 1,050 miles away

QOTD: Today I wanted to ask if anyone here has or currently a barefoot runner. If so, tell us about your experience please.

ATTQOTD: The only barefoot running I can say I have done was as a kid, so that doesn't really count.

I ran in Vibrams for a while. (The ideal way to broadcast that you are an annoying runner, and have no fashion sense) I liked the concept, but I'm a bigger guy and I wound up having some arch issues. It didn't work for me, but I have a lot of friends that like more minimalist shoes. Most now run in Altra's which are 0 drop and have plenty of space for your forefoot to spread out, but also offer some cushion.

ATTQOTD: I tried vibrams once like everyone else after Born to Run. But I know someone who still runs in them. In Hawaii a few years ago, a runner sped past me barefoot. Recently I saw someone gingerly running barefoot on an asphalt trail in the rain trying to avoid sharp sticks and rocks.

All I remember about running barefoot/vibrams is to go slow and very short distances so your feet can acclimate.

ATTQOTD: I have not even attempted barefoot running. My sister did give it a try a few years ago with a pair of Vibrams, but against my advice didn't slowly ramp up the distance in them and ended up hurting her left foot. Alas, that didn't stop her from hiking ten miles round trip up and down Mt. LeConte in the Smokies a couple years later in them. She suffered after that decision too.

ATTQOTD: @jennamfeo and I saw the guy who ran Dopey barefoot. His feet were so nasty. All I could think of was him getting gangrene and needing them amputated. So no, I don’t run barefoot or minimalist.

ATTYQOTD: This month, the motivation is lacking a little. I just want to keep my weight steady, and that is keeping me going 3-4 days a week.

ATTQOTD: Hmm, I did a run on the Harmony of the Seas during a cruise in the Mediterranean. I put into the googles the distance from Houston to Marseilles, so that looks to be over 5300 miles.

Completely OT, but I’m going on the Harmony of the Seas at the end of May! I’m so stinking excited.

ATYQOTD - I may be the winner, live in Auckland New Zealand and was sent to Florence, Italy for work for two weeks (was a tough gig). I got a few runs in while there, distance between the two cities is 18,411km or 11,440 miles.

In terms of races, farthest I’ve travelled for a race is only around 50km/30ish miles
