Hurricane Irma?

I don't know about you guys but I'm hitching a ride with this lady

Yes, we arrive on the 23rd and I'm feeling the same way

We are supposed to drive down the 23rd and I'm also worried the infrastructure might still be a mess.

I really, really hope Irma isn't as bad as it seems. There is still time for it to weaken or turn or some other miracle.

I have lots of friends and family in central Florida, I am very worried for them. I can't imagine being stuck in this thing's path.

Sorry to repeat but anyone have experience with DME in this kind of situation? Do they take traffic conditions and crowds at the airport into account, or should I worry about missing my flight?

Never been in a hurricane but they have it going down to category 3 by the time it hits Orlando also it is said not to be a water event mostly wind.

NHC just updated their map. It has wobbled west. AL is now mostly in the cone of probability. So much can happen and quickly so your best bet is to watch the NHC website and locL news or weather channels.

My dad just sent me a message and now I'm going to pass it along. I urge everyone to go to the Orlando Sentinel website and watch the video of the meteorologist talking about the storm in relation to Orlando specifically. The situation if the eye passes directly over obviously won't be good, but it may not be what people are imagining or picturing. Disney World is west of the city and the worst winds will be to the east of the eye. And by the time the storm reaches Orlando, some weakening will likely occur. Please watch it - it may calm people's nerves/complete devastation mentalities a bit.

Cat 3 is not good. As a Sandy survivor I know the uncertainty and fear everyone is feeling right now and it sucks. Just think safe and smart and hope for the best. My thoughts are with everyone is Irma's path.

If it goes right up the middle, it will still be a Cat 3 directly over Orlando/WDW.

I know this is a thread about Disney and this hurricane, but I know many of us probably have family in FL, I do, or are visiting while this monster storm hits. Could I ask for some prayers, and positive thoughts for everyone this storm is going to affect, very worried!

I'm right there with you. I have family in Central Florida and am praying for their safety and everyone in Irma's path. My brother has reassured us that they are in the safest area possible as their city is considered in one of the safer zones as far as storms and flooding but with a storm this massive it's hard to know. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there. I will be staying tuned in to the Dis. It was comforting to wake up in the middle of the night and see real time posts from Dis members during Hurricane Matthew and to hear it wasn't as bad as expected. I keep hoping that this might also not be as bad as expected and Irma takes a sudden change in course that will lessen its impact. My sweet nephew told me, "I don't care if it takes away my house, I just don't want it to take away my life." Hoping and praying that it doesn't take away anyone's life.

Read alot of this thread. We are due to fly in 1 week on thursday. I can't even call and talk to cm's about what they are thinking, cause we are after the 13th. On the 14th. I have played out several sceniarios...

anyone else going in 1 week and unsure what we should do? Thanks for all your support.
mky

I know what you mean. I've been planning my upcoming trip for awhile now. We are almost exactly two weeks out, and I have no idea what to expect. I've got family flying in to Miami from Latin America, assuming the airport is back up and running. I've got family coming from Georgia. I was planning on driving down from TN. Our rental house is pretty much surrounded by water in the Tampa Bay, so I have no idea what to expect with that. I'm trying to find an evacuation map for Tampa right now to see if my rental is in the zone A I keep hearing about. It is pretty much on an island in the bay with a small bridge connecting it to the mainland, so I think storm surge could be a concern. It is so frustrating not knowing what is going to happen. I'm hoping that everything goes well, damage is minor, and it is all cleaned up before we get there. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I'm not making any decisions until after I see what the storm does.

1. leave as is and hope for best

This is my plan. At this point, no one is going to offer a refund until they see what happens. I see no reason to cancel until I either know my rental is damaged for sure and won't be repaired in time or have been refunded.

2. if cannot fly we could possibly drive straight through its only 21 hrs

Have you ever done a drive like that before? 21 hrs is a long time. Unless you are use to those kinds of trips, I'd break it up and stop somewhere on the way. We've done a few cross country 20+ hr trips out west, and they can be brutal. You don't want to show up already exhausted and stressed at the start of your trip.

However, if you are use to long road trips, this may be the best idea. You will have more flexibility in deciding exactly when or if to go, and won't have to worry about flight issues that may occur after the storm. I'd just make sure your drive won't be taking you down the east coast if that is where the storm heads. Damage to those roads might turn your 21 hr trip into a 30 hr trip, just something to keep in mind. But its really too soon to tell.

3. will it be worth it to even go or is it going to rain, and be flooded, etc. for whole vacation

I've gone to Disney in Sept before and am use to the heavy rains. We usually just put our ponchos on and go to the parks and get wet. We still have a good time. We did have bad flooding one trip to the point we couldn't go to the parks two days as the water was over our feet. We stayed in the hotel, had movie marathons, played games, and visited the hotel community center. To this day, the kids' favorite memory of Disney are the two days we got rained in and spent hanging out in the hotel. You can definitely still have a good time in the rain. It cuts the crowds down and doesn't effect most of the rides anyway as most are indoors. All you have to worry about is walking from one attraction to another.

4. chuck whole idea of going cut our loses and change go to california disneyland? We have wdw ap's could upgrade to the duel coast passes $$$ I think > but I cannot ask anyone on phone? yet till the 14th? I already made ressies got all except 1 day at present. But, haven't been west since 1995. OMG

If you check a few pages back, I noticed someone mentioned trying to switch their APs to Disneyland. You might want to pm them about what they were told. It seems like it would be cheaper to just reschedule for Disneyworld, but I get with vacation time off and long phone lines, that might not be possible. If you can change, at minimal cost, might be worth the peace of mind to do it, just to have uncertainty removed from the picture.

Hope you get everything worked out for your trip.

Ditto. My partner normally has off on Monday and found out he could take a PTO day because of Labor Day so we were gonna drive down 16-19 and he asked me if I made reservations yet and I said no cause I don't know what's around here that will be up n running much less 4 hours away in Orlando[/QU

That was a VERY helpful video. Informative and factual. Thanks so much for sharing.

You can always request an earlier DME if you are concerned. You aren't locked in to the one 3 hours before your flight.
Though we've taken a car to DME in Orlando rush hour, which took 1 hour and still gotten to MCO in plenty of time for our flight.

So with it being a supposed CAT 2-3 near Orlando, what is everyone's opinions on trying to switch to a hotel with Indoor entrances like AMA? My sister has been on hold for several hours I guess, trying to see if we could ride it out there for the first few nights. Not sure if it's even a possibility, so we will see.

I'm sorry if I sound ignorant. I'm just conflicted because the cast member I talked to earlier this evening made it sound as if Disney was the safest place to be through all of this and we would all be okay still coming.

Edited to add: Part of the reason I'm so conflicted is because we are flying out at 8:30am tomorrow morning if we follow through

Hi All,

My first post on the boards (but I've been a ghost for a while).

My flight leaves Manchester UK in just a few hours and I get into MCO tonight for a 16 Day trip which includes my wedding on 13th and of course our Honeymoon.

Got some family joining us Sunday (most likely Tuesday now if they can organise with Virgin and Disney).

Never experienced a Hurricane, though have stood beneath a passing Tornado in Kansas. I'm sure it's probably very naive of me to still be heading out into Irmas path and I'm feeling quite anxious but this trip is once in a life time and years in the planning (and funds saving) and I can't see when else we would be able to reschedule.

I'm staying at AKL, so if anyone's staying there over this coming weekend then I hope I get to bump into you! I hope even more that it's under less anxious and troubling circumstances and Irma has calmed her jets or shifted path.

Sending my best wishes to all affected so far and yet to come.

Cat 3 is still 111-129 mph winds... and by not a water event they are referring to the flooding they had in Texas because Harvey sat there for days... they are still expecting up to a foot of rain in places along this storms path... which will lead to localized flooding... Hurricane Ivan came ashore as a cat 3 near where I live and I promise you there was mega damage... the path they are predicting for Irma is horrific if it goes straight up the state there will be damage from Miami to the Florida Georgia line
