Visual Inspection

Yep... it does happen. We just got back to WL a little tired and soggy from an early MK day. Our room had not been cleaned or serviced. Oh well... I need a break anyway. 2 minutes after we got into our room, housekeeping showed up. We asked for 2 clean coffee mugs and tea and coffee for the morning but told them not to bother with the room because we were back for the evening. 5 minutes later, as I am half undressed, the guy showd up to do a visual inpection. Can I get dressed first? He came in, gave the beds the eyeball for some reason and left. I understand the reason behind it but when I am tired, soaked and miserable you could at least be more pleasant about it.

We’ve been in our room during plenty of security checks. If your security guy didn’t say anything, you could be mistaking grumpiness for quiet embarrassment. Anyways, that’s the vibe I get from most of them as we’re laying in bed during their walk through. :rotfl:
They walked through when you were in bed?????? I've never had that happen. I've never even been in the room when they did the security check and I don't stay out late.

I’m an early riser, so I open the door when security knocks, but my family loves to sleep late. Most of the time, they don’t even know that security has been in and out. Lol.

The whole 'security room check' idea is ridiculous and accomplishes nothing. It's just to give Disney deniability in case something happens. "Well, we did everything we could! We had regular room checks!" Yeah, except the CM who came in, looked around the room, and left, never checked under the bed or in the dressers or in the closets where the shooter had all the guns stashed...

Well, if you stay value or moderate, forgo housekeeping and hang out in your room all day like we tend to do, you’re sure to encounter them eventually.
Oh! Is it when you decline housekeeping that they come? That would explain why I never had (or noticed) a check.

Yes, declining Housekeeping is definitely a trigger for a security check. Or if you forget to to remove the "Occupied" sign and leave the room; I know a man who is very good at doing that;).

As well they check deluxe resort rooms in addition to moderates' and values'.

I was napping when a guy showed up for a check. I stood awkwardly holding the door open while he did a cursory check of the room and bathroom.

We are at Wilderness Lodge not a value or moderate. Maybe the security guy was embarrassed or felt awkward instead of grumpy. I was grumpy because I was miserably hot and did not want to put my gross clothes back on. Lol. I was not outwardly grumpy though since I realize it is a policy. I do agree with the poster that said it will not help if they are not searching rooms... but better some effort than none, I guess.

Are you sure this was a security check and not a housekeeping inspection? I used to work in a hotel (not Disney) and the Housekeeping Manager on duty would be required to inspect a portion of each housekeeper's rooms cleaned. It was a quality control measure more than anything else. Perhaps the housekeeper marked your room as done for the day, which triggered a Supervisor to do an inspection, not knowing you were in the room.

I’m fine with it, people are crazy. Any added layer of security in a place like Disney I will usually always be okay with.

He knew we were in the room. He knocked on the door and I yelled for him to hang on. My adult daughter opened the door and he said he was coming in. I told her to tell him to wait so I could get dressed. He had to wait in the hallway while I found clothes and finished dressing. This was not a check by a housekeeping supervisor.

I have seen many people say something similar. That is why I posted this. :-) It is not strange that it happens to so many since it is a stated policy of Disney. It would be strange if it was not happening often, I think.

I googled it shortly after reading this thread. Apparently it started in the 3 monorail/MK resorts. I just spent almost 2 weeks at one of them and never say security in my building or room, but I did not decline housekeeping.

Also, there are 2 theories on why this started. 1) The Vegas shootings, though I find that hard to believe because the Poly is not tall, the Contemp doesnt overlook a crowded area. Not sure about the GF because I never spent any time in a room, only the restaurants. Not sure what the rooms overlook/dont overlook and never paid attention to the height of the building.

The other theory was that someone had passed in a room and was not discovered until they were supposed to be checked out. If that is the case, maybe they should only check rooms with single occupancy??

But most likely it was none of these and we will never know the real reason.

We were at POFQ last year and I went to the parks while hubby stayed in bed, with a horrible cold. I am an AP and love Disney....he is not an AP holder and really doesn't dig the parks. We were in the area for a concert in Orlando so we decided to spend a few nights at WDW. Well, I totally forgot to tell hubby about the room security check and boy oh boy was he pissed, but too sick to do much but just lay there embarrassed. By the way, this was the time that the marathon was going on and we were NEVER informed about all of the fireworks that started at 5:30 am.>:(:hyper2:

During our stay in December, we came back to our room in the afternoon on day 1 as I've always done, to take a nap. We did not refuse mousekeeping, for what that's worth. Our room had already been done that day. I had NO idea about the room checks. Put out our little sign on the doorknob, crawled happily into bed, and dozed off. I wear earplugs because DB snores, so I guess I never heard the knock. What I DID hear was the courtesy check gentleman slamming the door open against the deadbolt block. I spent a very unhappy several minutes telling him we were napping, and heck no he wasn't coming in our room while we were in there. He left and took our door hanger sign. Couldn't get back to sleep after that. Called the hotel and spoke to the manager, and they still didn't mention security checks. Just told me they were maintenance checks. I reminded them we were in a freshly renovated room and I'm sure mousekeeping would have noticed anything that was broken. Got nowhere, they just continued lying to me.

One of the company office folks called me the next day while we were out trying to enjoy one of the parks. I missed the call, had to call back and left a message. Spent two days playing phone tag. I never did get a straight answer or the actual word "security" check out of the lady, although she did tell me that the front desk was supposed to be telling people about the room checks at check-in. uhhh ... NOPE. I didn't find out what was actually going on until I did an internet search to see if others were having the same issue at disney, and found the thread about room checks here in the DIS forum. (I signed up a long time ago and have been pretty much inactive here since then.)
FWIW, the resort was ASM. It was my first time staying at a value resort, and it'll be the last.

The security checks were started in response to the Las Vegas shootings. Unfortunately, in today's world - accept it as another layer of safety that Disney has in place. Disney has the right to "security check" any room at any time.
