The Running Thread - 2020

In light of today’s marathon (Congrats to everyone that ran today whether you finished or not!) temps, I have a question. It maybe a little TMI

Are there any tricks to not stink? Seriously. I sweat - a lot - even when it’s not hot. Deodorant is a given as is moisture-wicking clothes. Any other suggestions?

No tricks that I know of. I definitely felt bad for the people around @Bree and I while we rode Tower of Terror yesterday.

Deodorant doesn’t really work when it’s hot & humid anyway. Your best bet is wet wipes at the finish along with a change of dry clothes.

QOTD: Todays question has nothing to do with running, but wanted to ask who you think will win tonights big game between LSU and Clemson?

ATTQOTD: LSU LSU LSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Currently at work but I will be south bound in a few hours to see me tigers play! GEAUX TIGERS!

ATTQOTD: This Auburn tiger will be cheering on the Bayou Bengals tonight! Geaux Tigers, bring it back to the SEC please!

I was really surprised to see the marathon shortened. I took a look at the temperatures and they didn't get into the 80s until 11. The 70s and low 80's seems really low to shorten a race even with high humidity.

I had my first race of 2020 yesterday, a 12k trail prediction run. Your place is based on how close you are to your prediction as opposed to who runs the fastest. It was a sloppy muddy mess and there were portions that staying on my feet was a challenge but it was fun.

I also found that our turnpike rest areas have private shower rooms. They are for truckers but anyone can use them. It came in handy since I had to go right from a muddy race to a birthday party. I was able to stop and have a quick shower and still made it in plenty of time. I want to do more trail running in general in 2020 and races in particular so it was a good start to the season.

Fun Friday QOTD: I just recalled that I am registered for the Louisiana Marathon on 1/19/2020 and theres no chance in me running it. For fun I wanted to know what the cut off time for the race is and come to find out it's a 16 min pace or 7 hours, just like Disney. So for the question, do you think it is possible to walk 26.2 miles below 16 min pace without training?

I know you already decided but I would probably take a different approach in this situation. I can walk 26 miles any day provided I'm not injured and walking does give you training benefit. I would start the race and do an easy zone 3 run as long as you are comfortable with and then walk. If you can get 10 slow miles in then walk you should be well ahead of the cut off time.

That is of course assuming there are no other injuries and you have some miles in the legs.

Art of Animation or one of the All Star resorts for a race weekend? If you vote All Star, which one?

I'e never done AoA but have stayed at both POP (multiple times) and All-Star Music for rD races. I can't say there is really any big different other than Pop (or AoA for you) is generally a shorter trip to and from most races. I'd just go by the best price between them and stick with that.

I have an upcoming race with some friends and it makes me extremely self conscious to hang with them and certainly ride home with them after the race because I know it will be bad.

I would bring a change of clothes and I always have some of these in my car. Towel off first, give yourself ten or fifteen minutes to cool down, do a wet wipe "shower" and change.

QOTD: Todays question has nothing to do with running, but wanted to ask who you think will win tonights big game between LSU and Clemson?

I was hoping for a rematch against LSU for the Bucks but with them out I'm not really invested in either team. Burrow is a local guy so I want him to have a good game but as long as it is still a contest in the last quarter I'm happy.

I'm going go with a bold prediction and say the Tigers will win. I don't really follow college football or have a vested interest in either school, so it doesn't matter one way or the other to me. I'll check the score in the morning, but certainly won't tune in at all.

@LSUlakes glad to see you back and active - great start to the 2020 running thread! LSU looks so dominant and i have a close family friend who played for them, so Geaux Tigers!

I sweat a lot when running (hot and humid local weather, I look pretty drenched after a 5k and at 10k and up I look like I've just gone for a swim).

For local races, I usually check a bag with a full change of clothes, including underwear, and a ziploc bag to put wet sweaty clothes. After the race I'll change into the nice dry clothes. I definitely feel a lot better after doing this and feel like I stink less, and it definitely feels less awkward going out for breakfast afterwards.

ATTQOTD:
I am a Michigan State fan so don’t have a huge vested interest in the game. But I am also a die hard Saints fan - wild card weekend sucked - so LSU is Louisiana, and the Saints are Louisiana... I’m going LSU!

I was there, doing my first full, and it was BRUTAL! I started in front of F, roughly middle of the pack, and took it easy from the start, running about a minute slower than Marathon pace. It was sticky but okay, but the sun came up just about the time I hit MK (mile 10ish) and BAKED us. After AK, during the road and parking lot miles, it was scary hot with no shade and the asphalt just keeping in the heat, and people were dropping all over the place.

I ended up walking the entire second half as my heart rate would spike even trying intervals. I was about 30 minutes ahead of the balloons when the red flag was called and the course shortened, so just missed Blizzard Beach. Disappointed but honestly, I understand why. They said the heat index at 11am hit 90! It was like early summer weather.

oh man I am really behind on the QOTD's.

1.) I buy shoes based on mileage and feel. I have been running long enough that I know when I need a new pair of shoes.
2.) I only drink a little water before my run as long as its under 10 miles. If its over 10 I do take some water with me but I only ate when I was training for full marathon
3.) Not participating in Marathon weekend but planning to participate in my first Run Disney event for Wine and Dine.
4.) Even with Training a full marathon is tough. I ended up getting the flu the day of but I had trained for 26 weeks and so I went for it. The first 14 miles were good, by mile 16 I was losing the contents of my stomach all over the city. I ended up having to walk/jog the rest of the race and stopping to get sick. My time was horrible, I crossed the finish line before being swept and on my own 2 feet so for me it was a success and I will never do it again. LOL
5.) We are buckeye fans here but I say LSU will win (got to cheer on a local boy).

so you are pulling for the tigers
Exactly, since there are no Paladins in play. For those of you who don't know what a Paladin is: https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football
mallory did have some fun at the fort. Went for a walk a dusk and did see some deer. She was barking and they just kept looking. I thought one might come up to her. Kept looking at her. She had a good time. Home now and she is wiped out.
Sometimes you (meaning me) need a little good news and this is it. Thank you.
