I am struggling with when to jump back in to traveling. My next trip was at the end of May, flying to Utah. TBH, I am just not feeling up to getting on a plane right now. While I think things will ease up in the next two months, I really don't feel like I will be comfortable flying that soon. Trip after that was July to Glacier. I am probably a little nuts from staying at home so long but actually thinking of driving to Glacier. Yeah it is a loooong drive, but with 3 drivers it would be doable. And we would be going right by T. Roosevelt NP. Probably never get there otherwise. On the other hand, flights are now dirt cheap to Glacier.

Anyone else struggling? How do you feel July will be - normal, more normal but not going anywhere? Would you feel better traveling by car than plane?

Well, as the CARES act looks likely to pass, I was thinking about how to spend the money. And was frustrated that it looks like college-aged DS will get no amount. Then DH came home at lunch and announced that he will have to take a pay cut of 15% (no reduction in hours) effective this week. Guess the CARES money will go to making up for the pay cut, at least for a little bit.

I did get choked up and then had to have a perspective reset. We’ve financially set ourselves to weather these kind of things (we went through a big pay cut in 2008-09 that woke us up). And we can tighten our belt and be fine. It is going to mean scaling back vacations, but compared to what so many other people are dealing with, it really isn’t that big of a deal.

Thank you all for being a supportive place on the internet. That’s rare.

I also appreciate that this is such a congenial, supportive place on the internet. Twitter makes me anxious with all of the politics and Instagram is breaking my heart with my kids' and their friends' lives in limbo--I know it's necessary but twenty-somethings in social isolation is a special kind of sad for me.

I have a July 1 trip planned with DD and I am hoping more than anything, that we can go, and yes we have to fly. I gotta figure we can't hide forever. But of course only time will tell.

I'm struggling with what to do with the money I'll get for my kids. I've always gotten to claim them on my taxes. That was pretty much the only thing in our settlement agreement I insisted on. We don't really have a formal arrangement for how we handle finances (well we do but we don't follow it--I was supposed to get monthly support). My ex pays for health and dental insurance, we try to split medical bills, tutoring, art class, etc. I was paying for swimming but dd quit that. I do pay her car insurance and provide her with a car (and plan to do the same for ds). I feel like I should give my ex at least half of what I get for the kids though since I already got a $4,000 credit for them when I filed my taxes.

If they use our 2019 filing (we've already done ours), then my younger stepson is on our taxes for that year (he goes back and forth between us and his mom every year). I'll be curious to see if his ex asks him for it.

My kids are split between us so I imagine I should get one and my ex should get one.

Have you considered setting up a Schwab One Brokerage account ($100 bonus if you apply via supportal, fund and maintain an average of at least $1,000 for 45 days), open an Amex Schwab Plat (60k MR SUB), so you have the ability to “cash out” MR at 1.25 cpp?

(Might be a good time to invest those points anyway.)

Been meaning to ask someone about those Schwab accounts... is it only a good idea if you have a certain (high) amount of MRs or is there value in it otherwise?

Does chase or Amex send a refund check for a card that has an overpayment? Can this be done with chat or sm?

I still haven't given up on my mid-May Orlando trip, just waiting to see what happens. I have a DVC rental through an owner and I have not yet contacted her try to to reschedule, I'm still hoping it happens. After that we have a family reunion in early July, we can drive to our VRBO rental house, but all my kids will have to fly in. I think things will be getting back to somewhat normal by then.

I too am struggling. I had the following planned:
Mid-May trip to Naples to spend a week with my parents
August trip to Seattle/Vancouver (DCL Alaska)

I certainly don't want to risk getting my parents sick so that's up in the air. DCL is obviously also up in the air (DCL would have to be back up and Vancouver would have to be letting ships dock). Plus I suppose school could start earlier (which I think it should since we lost a third of the year).

I'm thinking if these trips get cancelled the kids and I will go to Michigan in July/August to see my parents. I would probably re-book my cruise for next summer in Europe (dd's high school graduation). I also have a RCI cruise booked for spring break next year that I probably will cancel. My ex was supposed to take the kids to Chicago this year and he's having to cancel. He hasn't had the kids for spring break in ages so I want to offer it to him.

I'm oddly at peace with not having a plan. I guess what's going on has put things in perspective in terms of the things I whine about:)

I can't remember if you bought your baseball tickets already or not but if you did two things. One they are refunding for cancelled games now that aren't being played. If the cruise gets cancelled I'd contact them to see if you can get a refund due to not still coming out here. You never know what they'll do. If not let me know and I may take them off your hands, I'm guessing it's just 3? Or help figure out a way for you to sell them :)

I am a bit concerned about my ds/dh last weekend in May trip to their first ever Nascar race. I really want them to be able to go!!

I saw earlier this afternoon that the Indy 500 got postponed until August 23. Guessing they are going to Charlotte? Or is memorial day early this year and it's somewhere else. Hopefully they get to go but if it is Charlotte, the fall weekend is still good and the weather won't be as hot but still nice.

Yes, I have 3 tickets for the Mariners on 8/8. I'll keep in touch:) Thanks!

Memorial Day is early this year, But Indy isn't Nascar, so I still have hope. Last I saw they cancelled through May 6th. They could maybe switch to a race in mid June if they could get a refund on their race tickets.

Oh and genealogy, my mom's diving in to the two lines I realized we hadn't looked at at has tracked one back to like 1692 in NY and I have a Knickerbocker last name back there, a Dorcas! and a Sylvester that might be Sylvestus. And one way back that's Joel which I thought was interesting cause I always thought of it as more modern name. The only bummer is the guy that may have been in thr Rev war is John Simons, so bit common which makes it harder to know if the one we found is him in the roll.
I found a few of names that were repeated in later generations, most commonly Nicholas. My grandfather was Nicholas and 2 of my cousins named their sons Nicholas but I was surprised there were 4 generations of Nicholas before my grandfather.
I’m confused why the people on social security get it. They are not out any income at all! 🤷🏻‍♀️ And most don’t pay taxes anymore either.
To spend and stimulate the economy but a lot of elderly are poverty level. My tenant gets $800 per month. That’s it. Not sure how she lives.
But to support the economy I told my mom to continue to pay her house cleaner who usually comes twice a month. When my mom balked, I pointed out that she will not be losing any income yet her house cleaner will lose all of hers when everyone cancels her services.
Well, pretty sure my wife is gonna keep mine :D
And I’m keeping DHs and putting it straight into savings. Sorry, not sorry.
My sister sent me a funny text about how her new pasta maker came in a box marked "Candy" on every side. So I guess someone is still stimulating the economy.

This reminded me that I have a kitchen aid pasta maker I haven't used in probably 15 years. So dd and I are making homemade pasta tonight. Yay!
My sister was rummaging in moms basement yesterday looking for the pasta maker. She found the plates but not the grinding attachment which is likely already lost in my sister’s house.

I feel bad for them, but worse that my 11 yo thinks social isolation is a good thing since no one has called him a bad name in 2 weeks. 😢

I was able to chat a while back to have credit transferred from one account to another. Another time, a phone call allowed them to credit the bank when my mom closed her Amex card and they credited the annual fee. I called to ask for a check and was told they will credit the bank account that payments usually come from.

I’d feel uneasy of April travel. Skeptical about May. June feels like a maybe to me and July I’m optimistic on. That’s my scale of feelings right now. I think everybody might approach this differently though.

EDIT: I’d feel a lot better about end of May than beginning of May. I REALLY hope Memorial Day travel is a thing we are all celebrating!!
