News Round Up 2020

Are there many businesses that are currently hiring? I believe when it is safe Disney will be one of the first employers to begin slowly opening again as we are seeing in Asia. i'm not sure how many of their employees will have looked and/or found work elsewhere.
I know grocery stores around me are hiring. I’ve heard Amazon is hiring a bunch for warehouses.
(Although I imagine there are a lot more layoffs than openings)

Surprisingly, yes and some of them are hiring very large numbers of employees.

The company I work for has jobs posted for an additional 5% of our workforce. We make food.

I was talking yesterday to a friend that works in management for a school bus company. They furloughed their drivers as each school district shut down. Now they think they made a mistake and are scrambling to figure out a way to not permanently lose a significant number of drivers. They are trying to find money for bonuses and other ways to give drivers some type of pay while they are out. Their drivers all have CDL's and DOT cards. People with those things are still in high demand in other transit/transport/shipping sectors. They couldn't hire enough drivers before this and now they fear they will lose some of the ones they had for good.

Does anyone know if furloughed CMs can get unemployment if they have ANOTHER part time job? I'm guessing no, which sucks since we count on both forms of income. If they are closed for months I don't think Disney has any other choice though. Most of us will stick around without them having to pay us. It will be really hard to have enough CMs trained and ready when they reopen though even just from this option. Laying off would be impossible.

I did look into this a little bit - just what happens if furloughed in general as it happened to my sister and the advice I saw was to apply and try for basically any situation you are in unless you left voluntarily.

Nothing to do with Disney, but if anyone here uses YouTube TV for streaming we now have EPIX free through April 25th!!!

Nothing to do on your part and YouTube will remove automatically at end of 30 days so you don't start to get charged.

Nice! :)

Thanks rteetz for posting this so quickly. P.S. I think I posted twice by mistake but didn't know how to delete one?

I imagine it will be longer. CMs will need to file for unemployment and Disney will probably hold jobs for them should they want to come back. Just basing this off of what happened in Nola during hurricane Katrina.

At least its an answer ... I guess "until further notice" just allows them to make week by week decisions. Without being "stuck" to a date in case things get better or worse. It is just good PR. Announcing ANY date right now would "look" irresponsible. It will be interesting to see how they start handling cancellations for the coming months then. Are they just not taking new reservations "until further notice" either?

Paying cast members for a whole month of not working is pretty generous, but let's be real here. When the parks open back up . .they will HAVE to let CMs go due to decreased demand to go to the parks. They aren't going to staff at 2019 levels for way reduced demand that is bound to happen for the rest of 2020.

And along those lines .. I am guessing we (the fans) will see things like reductions of menus, reduced capacity, increased prices, construction delayed or cancelled altogether until things pick back up and their money making engine is roaring again.

I mean . .we are just going to see increase in pricing from the inevitable inflation that is going to happen with the government just "magically" giving everyone $1200.
