Disney has pushed all Avatar and Star Wars films back a year and removed Mulan from the Calendar

I wasn't aware that they HAD any Star Wars movies scheduled to come out.

I only know about the one being directed by Taika Waititi and that one's still in development.

I think it kinda sucks that they don't know what to do about Mulan right now because of how people are feeling about China. That's a shame because it's a good story. In fact it's my favorite Disney cartoon. At no point have I felt like boycotting it because of the virus stuff. A good story is a good story. Speaking of that, I wonder if there is a noticeable difference in the China Pavilion with crowds? Are people hostile? I love that store and I would hate if people had nasty things to say to anyone working there like sooo many do if you don't have a mask on. It would be interesting to hear if all of this has changed the way people feel about that area.

I don't think the delay of Mulan's release has anything to do with ill will towards China. It's because most countries still have not opened their theaters and Disney relies on world wide profits just as much as U.S. domestic profits.

Even in the U.S., many people will not go to a movie theater yet, meaning their profits could tank if they try to release it in August.

I might also add that ill will towards China is mostly a U.S. - centric issue. International audiences do not share this bias. Right now, we are all more so looking at the U.S. as being irresponsible in propagating COVID, not China.

yep lots of people don’t care that’s why the cases are so high in USA. You have one person in your house that doesn’t care you got the whole household coming down with covid. They are costing millions of people their jobs and thousands their lives. They don’t care about themselves there is no way they care about you. Covid could of been done with but no people don’t care. it’s a shame the few is costing most of us these problems.
in other news Mulan is might be going to come out on video on demand.

Mulan's delay is not a political move Tennet has also been pulled off the schedule indefinitely and at one point the theater industry was hoping that those two movies would help revive them.....

It will be interesting to see if Black Widow and Soul (pushed from May and June respectively) will get a theatrical release in November, be moved to VOD Rental/Disney + or also be indefinitely delayed

It doesn't help that the lead actress in Mulan has repeatedly spoken out in support of Hong Kong's protests for democracy ; that does not make for a high-grossing film in China.

I thought she had spoken out against the protests, i.e. in support of the HK police. Her words may have been misconstrued, but I think that is what started the controversy.

I didn't know they had any Star Wars films planned. I thought they had cancelled them all. But it's understandable why it got set back.

They had placeholders in the schedule but had not announced which in-development projects they would be. We are not sure what the next film entries will be like - honestly I think the delay is a good thing for them. It will ramp excitement back up.

The one shot “X: a Star Wars Story” films were scrapped but a new trilogy is planned

Yeah, but rumors now are that they may revisit Solo, though it could be for D+. The Rian Johnson trilogy is the most likely since the Game of Thrones guys were dismissed, but I guess we really don't know. I'm happy to wait as long as there is some good D+ stuff to fill the void. It will be harder waiting for Avatar - I swear they need to fast track an animated series or something to keep the franchise alive. The theme park land really boosted it but for those who haven't been, they need something to keep it fresh.

When I visited AK last year and went to the Pandora section, I found most of the people I talked to hadn't even seen the movie. I imagine they thought it was just something Disney made up for the park.

Yeah sure. Avatar is "delayed".

Avatar is perpetually delayed - it's almost comical. I mean, James CAmeron is a great filmmaker, but he can't seem to make but one movie every 10 or 12 years.

Avatar was actually much bigger overseas. I bet the Asian visitors knew it. It's funny how it never had much traction in the US though, which is why I think they need an animated series or something to recharge the brand a bit, considering how long a sequel is taking.

They've filmed 2 and 3. I believe the filming at least is all done. So I think delayed is the right word. The money sunk at this point pretty much means the films will come eventually. They are just so disassociated with the original at this point it's hard to imagine the audience will have much relation to them. But who knows? The track record of movies with long lags between sequels is pretty mixed:

https://screenrant.com/sequels-longest-gaps-time-between-films/
Mary Poppins -- not bad
Blade Runner -- not good
Star Wars Prequels and Sequels -- Opinions vary wildly
Mad Max -- Fury Road was pretty well received though I thought it was pretty bad
Tron -- uggh
Dumb and Dumber -- really uggh
Rambo and Rocky -- uggh on 1, uggh on Rocky 5 but yeah on Creed, boo on Creed 2
Godfather 3 -- ummm..... ouch
Toy Story 3 -- well... depends who you ask
Sin City -- blah

Avatar's audience here were mostly the devotees who saw it over and over in IMAX 3D. There was actually some talk at the time about fans who became clinically depressed because Pandora wasn't real and they couldn't go there.

It is odd that, despite all the money it made, it never spawned a mainstream fandom like Star Wars or Harry Potter did. None of its dialogue ever became a catchphrase, and most people couldn't name even one of its characters.

They'll probably do a rerelease of the first movie before the sequel comes out, just to get it back into the public consciousness.

Well, I loved it, but no I did not get depressed or anything about Pandora not being real. I wonder if any of those people have been to AK lately? :) Unfortunately in the US a lot of people saw it as gimmicky and I know most of my friends didn't like the evnironmental message. :rolleyes2 It was still the top box-office champion for 10 years, people did like it.Unfortunately, without more product to build off of, it kind of languished. The theme park helped, and now that it is synergized with Disney completely I hope they do more.
