Most well respected "fire sceintists" agree that a lit ember can travel no more than one mile. Thus, being 2+ miles away from a hillside that may ignite means my home has a zero percent chance of igniting from an ember originating from that fire.
Yes, your home may have “zero percent” chance of igniting from an ember two miles a way, but the fire can still travel from house to house through neighborhoods for miles from that hillside very quickly. Fires are very capable of spreading quickly through neighborhoods that are not on hillsides, especially in dry, high-wind conditions. It has happened and will happen again. And the severity and size of these fires will continue to increase over time, causing even greater risk to places typically thought to be safe from fires.
