Disney Movies A-Z June Exercise Challenge

Congratulations Twilight Sparkle for being the first team member to reach Indefatigable Purple!

Two classic "J" features to mention:

Johnny Tremain (1957), based on the Newberry-award-winning book by Esther Forbes, tells the story of a Boston boy involved in the events leading up to the American Revolution. It was made for television, but ended up being released in theaters before being shown in two episodes of The Wonderful World of Disney in 1958.

Jungle Cat (1960), a True-Life Adventure film, follows a family of jaguars in Brazil. Three photographers spent two years gathering footage--some of which was ruined by heat and humidity before it even reached the studio. This was the last theatrical True-Life Adventure, as Walt felt that nature documentaries were better suited to television.

Congratulation Shrfleen for turning Indefatigable Purple!

"K" takes us to a couple different parts of the world. Kniga Masterov (The Book of Masters) (2009) is a Russian-language film, based on Russian fairy tales, that was made by the CIS division of Disney (Disney's Russia arm). It was Disney's first film made in Russia.

And Kundun (1997) is based on the childhood and young adulthood of the 14th Dalai Lama (who is addressed as Kundun, meaning "presence"). Kundun was written by Melissa Mathison (who also wrote E.T.) and directed by Martin Scorsese. China so strongly objected to the distribution of the film that apparently Mathison, Scorsese, and other production crew were banned from ever entering China.

:welcome: snels to Indefatigable Purple!

"L" brings us animated favorites Lady and the Tramp (1955) and Lilo and Stitch (2002). A live-action film that you might not be as familiar with, though, is Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. (1966), starring Dick Van Dyke as a castaway U.S. Navy pilot. It was Walt's idea to make a loose adaptation of Robinson Crusoe, and according to Wikipedia, "this is the only film in which [Walt] received a story credit (as 'Retlaw Yensid')." Because the studio got permission to shoot on the USS Kitty Hawk, Walt scheduled the film's world premiere on the ship.

Several well-known "M" movies, such as Mary Poppins (1964), Monsters, Inc. (2001), and Mulan (1998). Speaking of Mary Poppins, did you see the sketch "Crosswalk: The Musical" when James Corden took The Late Late Show to London last week? He and Ben Kingsley made an interesting Mary and Bert as they performed some of the songs -- in a crosswalk along the Strand in the middle of London.

A couple of other "M" movies are about Mars. In Mars Needs Moms (2011), a computer-animated film, Milo has to save his mom when she's abducted by Martians. Seth Green was cast as Milo and performed his lines wearing a motion-capture suit, but then the studio decided to use a younger voice. Coincidentally, the boy with that voice was also named Seth--Seth Dusky. Mission to Mars (2000) focuses on a Mars expedition gone wrong, and the rescue that follows. It stars Tim Robbins, Gary Sinise, Don Cheadle, Connie Nielsen, and Jerry O'Connell.

35 minute walk

scdak, I think we're sharing the same heat wave. It zaps my motivation and energy. Kudos to you for an hour of cycling in it! We're supposed to have rain tomorrow (today, I guess, actually considering how late it is already). I might just run out the door and stand in it.
