I don't have a Freedom, but if I got one, my charges to my room would code for 5%?
I wouldn't think so, not room charges. It could happen but I don't think it's intended to. Since the category is Live Entertainment, I can't imagine charges that code as travel will trigger it. The intention is things like direct ticket sales since they code as Entertainment. The FAQ calls out "Purchasing from a hotel/concierge is not included nor excursions or purchases as part of a travel package." I imagine these type of purchases come through as travel and that's why they'd get excluded. But you never know until someone tries.

What is included in the Select Live Entertainment category?
Merchants in the Select Live Entertainment category sell tickets for in-person entertainment such as major sporting events, zoos and aquariums, concerts, theatrical productions, museums, tourist attractions and exhibits, amusement parks, circuses, carnivals, bands, and entertainers. Ticket agencies selling on behalf of the entertainment venue are included. Some merchants that sell tickets for in-person entertainment are not included in this category; for example, movie theaters, bowling alleys, horse racing tracks, casinos, and dance hall/clubs. Purchasing from a hotel/concierge is not included nor excursions or purchases as part of a travel package.)

A word of caution for those booking AirBnbs, we were at a Luau next to a couple who’s reservations was canceled the night before their arrival because the reservation that was in their rental tested positive for COVID so needed to stay. They had to scramble to find a new place for a lot more money.
That would make me really mad! If they tested positive they should have to go to a hotel, not stay in the Airbnb. Although it might need extra cleaning. Wonder if Chase Sapphire insurance would cover the sudden cancellation/need to stay elsewhere.

have a 4 night Airbnb in London coming up. Worried about flights, don’t need an extra worry!

I am curious to hear if the Disney world hotel charges work for the 5% on Freedom. If the charge just says Walt Disney World, they very well could.

Ugh. I'm really not an AirBnB person, give me a hotel any day. But, I did book a unit for Panama Beach. I put a lot of searching into to find an acceptable-to-me unit. My first booking was canceled when it was sold to a new owner. I'm just waiting for something else to go wrong. I'm already not thrilled about this softball tournament to begin with lol

We usually don’t Airbnb, but we’ve traveled with friends that only Airbnb, but I don’t like the risks associated with it. I prefer fully refundable hotels on points.

We use Airbnb a lot because we can book places that allow our dogs! Sometimes we stay at pet friendly hotels, but we prefer Airbnb private houses, they usually have yards for the dogs, and then we have the option if we need to leave the dogs and go out to dinner or whatever. It gives us way more flexibility. We’ve never had an issue and we’ve stayed at probably a dozen Airbnb’s since covid started. But that would make me mad 😡

Agreed.

My dad used to travel annually with a bunch of friends to watch some Major League Baseball (different team every summer). One year they went to San Francisco and whoever made arrangements decided on an Airbnb. Of course they got there and somehow it was double booked. The owner was super apologetic and paid to put them up in a hotel but no thanks. I prefer hotels.

We have a Hilton Honors Biz card that is coming up for renewal (AF) soon. I can't see any reason to keep this one (already have the Aspire), but I would like to know if anyone here can see a compelling reason to keep one of these? I see the FNC is at 15k spend (vs. 60k on the Aspire) but that's a lot of spend.

I used my Amex FHR offer to book the Ritz Carlton Atlanta for one night (Saturday) for Georgia Tech's family weekend. I used my CS Platinum but my Vanilla Platinum is renewing soon and I got a retention offer last year so I'm planning on canceling. Should I rebook the night using my Vanilla Platinum (price hasn't changed)? My other option is to book Friday night with my Vanilla Platinum and change my plane ticket so I'm there Friday through Sunday (not sure if I can have two nights on two reservations or if that will be a hassle). Friday night is actually pretty cheap so it would only be another $250 or so (which includes $100 for dining and free breakfast).

I have no other plans to stay in a hotel right now as I'm watching the air travel meltdown and feeling like I don't want to go anywhere.

Anyone use the Jetblue Amex offer yet for 80 off 200? If your not booking a flight you need to
be on are you booking refundable or any flight and cancelling for travel bank.

Hi does anyone know offhand which airlines do not have expiring travel bank/miles?

I was surprised to see Delta doesn't (at least that is what the cust service rep said).

I'm talking you book a flight and for some reason or another you cancel it for the later credit.
Most have 1 year expiration date.

I'd go for 2 nights, giving myself a bit of time to relax or visit a local farmer's market on Saturday morning. You might want to try for a retention offer on the CS Plat -- I had a retention offer on my plat last year and got another this year (I hardly use it, but I do like the perks that come with it). I think that you'd be fine with 2 different reservations (Friday and Saturday night) as long as you book the same room type.

They'll usually keep you in the same room with 2 separate reservations. You might need to have the room card rekeyed the second day. You probably won't get the $100 dining credit twice.

Sounds like a good plan to make it a 2 night trip. Then you don't have to worry about using up the other credit some other time.

I got back yesterday from a quick 1 night visit to Ottawa for a 1st birthday / house-warming party. My flight was at 8am on Saturday morning, so up at 5:15am and out the door by 6:15am. This was the flight that AC moved from the small regional airport to Pearson a few days after I booked the ticket. I'm not going to complain as it cost me 9k miles and I was biz class both directions (using my eUpgrades); cash price would've been over $1,500.00. Thought about @LilSweetPeaPhoto -- coming back yesterday there were 6 pilots in biz class with me and several FAs in economy class (all in uniform).

Pearson airport had a line for security like I've never seen for a domestic flight. Complete craziness. Thankfully I have Nexus (aka GOES), which has a separate line and there were only 8 or 10 people in front of me. I would not want to have to been stuck in the other line. Flight took off on time. I was the first person to the rental car area; I booked a premium sedan, but received a brand new Mercedes 300 SUV. It was a really nice car and left me wanting a new car (first world problems). The rental lot was close to empty and the desk agent told me that they were running at a car deficit.

I booked the Fairmont Chateau Laurier gold floor; I had stayed there over 10 yrs ago (in a regular room) and didn't enjoy it; I have wanted to try a Fairmont gold floor room for a little while. It was an amazing experience. I was able to go directly up to the 4th floor to check-in when I arrived at 10am and they had a room ready for me. They told me that I could have breakfast in the lounge, which I did after I put my bag away and got my gifts organized. I had requested a quiet room and received a room looking at the Parliament buildings on the back side of the hotel, which was amazingly quiet. Room was a decent size and the bathroom had a shower only, which was also a request of mine. The 2 desk agents were both exceptionally nice and helpful. Breakfast in the lounge was delicious. I think this will be my new 'go to' hotel in Ottawa. When I returned from the party in the early evening the lounge had freshly-baked cookies and scones with clotted cream, butter and jam in the lounge with an excellent assortment of tea bags. I didn't eat breakfast there the next morning as I was having some family meet me in the hotel dining room for breakfast. Tbh I almost preferred the lounge breakfast and I should've just paid for my family to eat in the lounge with me.

This is the tail end of the line for security. It wound around the back of the airport, then snaked up to the front and wound end-to-end several more times before it left the building. Keep in mind this was at 6:45am; the security agent told me it's like that all day.

I have a family member who is looking for a new card and is deciding between the AmEx Gold and the Citi Premier. He has a Discover and a CSP, both opened more than two years ago. The AmEx Gold probably would be a keeper card (the GrubHub and Uber credits would get used, essentially covering the AF, and the SUB seems good now, especially if he can pull up the 100,000 that's listed on DOC). The Citi Premier might not be a keeper card (the $95 AF seems hard to justify given the card's benefits) but the 80,000 points (which as I understand it can be redeemed for $800) would make it worth the AF for one year.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

ETA: I seem to recall that an AmEx card could support any(?) other AmEx card? Does this still work? So for instance a support link from a Plat card could be used to apply for a Gold?

The Gold is nice for the 4x at grocery stores if he can leverage that benefit too.
