Taking Stitch to Hawaii and NOT Leaving Him There

Yes, please! I will have to figure out how to make those. My girls and I actually made quite a few bottle cap magnets/necklaces for the holidays last year, so I still have the supplies for that. I didn't realize you could buy downloadable images for them on Etsy! I guess you can buy everything on Etsy. ;)

I will try and do that with her (although I know how hectic things are on embarkation day!). I thought I read somewhere that you now can only buy day passes online beforehand, so I guess I will take a chance and buy her one and then take her there and show her around that first day.

Do you know if the locker rooms have "regular" (non tub/shower combo) showers? Are they kind of like an athletic facility's showers with curtains or a door? Because I was thinking that my mom might actually find it more comfortable to shower there than having to step in a tub in the stateroom. I believe we're midships on deck 8, so she wouldn't have far to go!

I will PM you the Hidden Mickey graphics shortly. I think it is only on the two new ships that you can no longer purchase the day passes.

Yes, the locker rooms have standard showers with curtains. I use the showers in the locker room and I will especially do it this time as we have a split bathroom and they freak me out. The water pressure is much better up in the spa as well. It is a while since I have been on the Magic so this may have changed, but the last time one shower had a rain shower head and one had a shower head that kind of gave a waterfall effect.

Day 22

When Mickey called at 7:30 that morning, we were both rested. We got up and got ready. We had a reservation for the character breakfast had Storytellers Cafe. This was one of my favourite meals last year. When we arrived at the restaurant, Brer Fox was "helping" the hosts to check in guests. He indicated that he did not have a reservation for us. I gave him my best teacher look and suddenly he found us. I realised straight away what I was up against. It looked like I found another Stitch-like character. I had never encountered Brer Fox before, but he seemed like fun. We were asked to sit down for a minute and soon we were shown to our table. Shortly afterwards, our server introduced himself. At breakfast they offer both an a la carte menu and a buffet. Last year we went with the a la carte menu, but this time we decided to give the buffet a go. It was pretty standard breakfast buffet fare, but the food was hot and tasty. Graham had some oatmeal followed by sausages, bacon scrambled eggs and toast. I went with fresh fruit followed by sausages, breakfast potatoes and omelette. We both had coffee and orange juice. Pretty much as soon as we had sat down, Dale came to visit. I just had time to get some food from the buffet before first Koda an then shortly afterwards Kenai came to visit. For a bit it looked like Chip was getting close, but then they did a parade with the kids and Chip disappeared after this. When he came back, he was at the opposite end of the restaurant. Terk came by a little later. We had already finished our breakfast and there was still no sign of Chip or Brer Fox. I was not too bothered about Chip as I have met him plenty of time, but really wanted a photo with Brer Fox. I was just about to give up when he appeared. By then the area where we were sitting had started to empty out and we got some quality time with him. This more than made up for Meeko not being there this time.

Even though we had not rushed breakfast, I was by the entrance to California Adventure by 9:15. At the DVC desk opposite the entrance I spotted one of the cast members who had been on our cruise. So I went over to say “hi”. This was her first day back at work. Once we had a brief chat, I headed over to The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure. True to form, this was yet again down for technical issues. So I headed into the other issue towards Soarin. This does normally open at 9:30, but they opened slightly ahead of time to make up for The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure being closed. A short line had formed on the entrance plaza before they allowed us to go down to the ramp, but then we were sent straight to the holding area right in front of the ride. I have done this ride so often that I can pretty accurately tell what should happen in what order and in what time frame. However, this time round it felt that we were waiting forever. When they finally let us in, they apologized and mentioned that they had a problem with the seat belts. At this time I did not really think anything about this. I had ended up in the second row and had every intention to come back to try for the first row. I was wearing flip flops and usually they ask you to just leave them on the floor. This time round the person doing the checks objected to this and asked me to put it in the net underneath the seat. I bent forward to retrieve them and the seat belt suddenly became undone. This completely freaked me out. For the whole of the ride, I was hanging on to bars on either side of the seat for dear life as I was so worried that it would become undone again. I did not enjoy it at all. There was nothing that would have convinced me to go on this ride again that day.

I headed over towards Paradise Pier. The most direct route went past all the building fences. This time it no longer felt like a building site, but more like a theme park even though the fences were still up. Once I entered Paradise Pier, I stopped and took some photos before heading to Toy Story Midway Mania. The posted waiting time was 45 minutes, but the line did not look that long. In any case, I wanted to do this at least once. So I braved the crowds. In the end the waiting time was about half what was posted. I did have a little time to take some photos while waiting. After I enjoyed the ride, I noticed a lovely room set up in the area where you return the glasses. For some reason I had never noticed this before.

When I came out of the ride, I browsed the shops in the area for a bit. I noticed that in the area across from Toy Story Midway Mania, Woody was out. I always thought that this area is just stroller parking. Anyway, I decided to get in line for a photo with Woody. It was nearly my turn when the character escort announced that Woody would go for a break, but would be back later and Buzz would be out shortly. I would have preferred a photo with Woody, but decided to hang around for a photo with Buzz. He turned up about 10 minutes later. Once I had my photo, I decided to have another go at Toy Story Midway Mania. The posted waiting time was still 45 minutes and I waited a bit longer this time, but still only about 30 minutes.

When I finished with Toy Story Midway Mania, I took a stroll along the boardwalk area of Paradise Pier. When I came up near The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, the green army men came past. I don't know why I did not take a photo of this. I headed over to The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, but either it was still down or it was down again. In any case, I did not get to ride it this time. I headed over to the gift shop near Ariel's Grotto in the hope that Duffy may be in his photo spot. I got plenty of photos with Duffy last year, but he was wearing his Halloween outfit then and I was rather hoping to get a photo with him in his sailor outfit. Alas, that was not to be either.

I decided to have a wander around the Pacific Wharf area. I was still living in hope that the new Ghirardelli Factory Tour and Soda Fountain may be open. Unfortunately this was not the case. They were making good progress, but it looked like they were still a little while off. By that time I was quite thirsty. I went over to Rita's Baja Blenders and had a Blue Raspberry Tropicool, which was non-alcoholic. Essentially it was a glorified Slush Puppy, but it was tasty and very refreshing. It was relatively hot and I could not believe how many people were having alcohol that early in the day. I was actually quite hungry so I headed across to the Lucky Fortune Cookery. I had a Teriyaki Beef Rice Bowl, which was very nice.

After lunch, I cut through A Bug's Land on my way to Hollywoodland. I really wanted to see Turtle Talk with Crush, which is located in the Animation Building at California Adventure. On my way in, I saw that they were offering various classes to draw characters. The next class on the schedule was Pluto. Even though I cannot draw to safe my life, this appealed to me. So I decided that Crush could wait and I would do this class. I did not have a long wait until they were starting to let people in. The seating was similar to that in a theater, but on each seat they had an oversized clipboard with a pencil and at the end of each row were piles of paper. The cast member taking the class essentially broke down the character into various shapes and lines and all over sudden it did not feel so daunting anymore. I would have to lie if I said I created a masterpiece, but the fruits of my labours actually somewhat looked like Pluto. Once I finished the class, I headed over to Turtle Talk with Crush. This was as funny as I had remembered and I was glad that I had made the effort. I browsed in a couple of shops and then I decided I had enough for the day. I took some photos on the way out and then I returned to the hotel.

P1010209.jpg

P1010210.jpg

Since I had spotted the Dooney and Bourke iPad case on the first day, it had never really left my mind. I decided to have a look in the hotel gift shop on the way to our room. They only had two of the iPad cases left, one of which had the perfect placement of the different elements of the design. I just knew that I had to have this. I had been given a Disney gift card by somebody on the cruise, which paid for a nice chunk of this. So I decided to just go for it. I went up to our room and collected the gift card before returning to the shop to get my iPad case. Fortunately nobody had snapped it up while I was gone. I have to say I am getting plenty of use out of this.

IMG_0097.jpg

I decided to check out Downtown Disney for a bit. There were a lot of changes happening at the time with some shops that were there last year being closed and about to be replaced by other shops. The big Lego shop that was closed last year had now reopened and I decided to check this out. I also checked out the big World of Disney shop and the shop where they are selling all the Vinylmations. Even the Pin Trading shop did not prove any temptation. I would have been fine if I had resisted the temptation to check out Vault 28. In this shop they sell quirky Disney fashion, but also Dooney and Bourke bags. As soon as I entered the shop, I spotted a small selection of lilac handbags with purple Tinkerbells and pink hearts on it. Those bags were also the perfect size to take to work and they were significantly cheaper than other Dooney and Bourke bags that I had seen in this size. Still, I decided to resist. One of the staff realised what was going on and came over. He told me that this bag really suited me, took one of the shelf and told me to take it over to the mirror. It took every ounce of restraint that I had to hand it back to him.

At this point, I had done more than enough walking for the day. I decided to return to the hotel. As we were now strictly speaking hotel guests, we were getting daily housekeeping. As the room looked nice and tidy, I decided to take the opportunity to take some photos of the room. I have to say I prefer the two bed set up to the bed and sleeper sofa. This is another reason why Old Key West is such a good fit for us as it has two beds in every studio. Once I had taken my photos, I just settled down with my book for a bit.

P1010830.jpg

At around 17:30 I figured that it probably should be safe enough to head down to the pool. Graham had warned me that the afternoons are very busy at the pools. I left a note for Graham where I was as he was out exploring somewhere and I had no idea when he would be back. When I got to the pool area, there were still a fair few people around, but not to the point that it felt crowded. The feature pool with the water slide was the busiest. There were also some families with kids in the Mariposa Pool, but they all kept out of my way when they realised that I intended to do some serious swimming. After swimming for about 45 minutes, I decided to head for the hot tub. This is the largest hot tub that I have ever encountered. This can prove a bit of a challenge at times. The hot tub was not busy as such. There were only a total of 6 people in the hot tub. However 4 of them were a mother with a baby who could not have been more than 6 months old and two older children who were probably 6 and 8 years old. I could not understand how one could take a baby in a hot tub, but the baby was actually very calm and did not cause a problem. The two older kids kept leaving the hot tub and then jump back in with a big splash and tried to swim laps in the hot tub. The other person who was there left in disgust after a short while. I did not give them that satisfaction and stayed. I know that they wished me gone as the kids get staring at me. In the end, they gave up before I did and I had a few minutes of precious peace and quiet.

I went back to our room around 19:00 and there was still no sign of Graham. However, housekeeping had been and done the turndown service. I was not quite sure what had hit me. I took a shower and then took a photo. I then spend some time catching up with things online. This evening I was determined to see World of Colour. So with about 5 minutes or so to go, I went out on our balcony. The people in the room next to ours had the same idea. I think this was their first time seeing it and they were very excited. It was kind of nice sharing in their excitement. As I knew we would watch it again the next day, I took plenty of photos.

Once the show was over, I headed back inside. There was still no sign of Graham and by this time it was too late to consider dinner. I sat down and caught up with some more stuff online. Eventually around 22:00, Graham returned. He had a fantastic day. He had eaten something on the way back. He suggested that we could head down to the Hearthstone Lounge where we just would have a drink and I could have something to eat. I checked this out online and I could find no indication until when they are serving food. I did not want to go downstairs only to find out that they no longer served food. I was also pretty tired at this stage. So we called it a day.

Love the update...

I have a mobility impairment and usually try to shower in the locker room. Your mom will find it easier than climbing in to the tub AND the shower curtain doesn't wrap around you! Lots of lovely towels, & robes & water slippers are in the lockers or can be had from the staff.

This update made me quite excited for my DL trip next year. Everything looked like such fun. I'll have to remember that breakfast.

You are in for a real treat. As to the breakfast at Storyteller's Cafe, I think this has been my all time favourite character meal. I have done breakfast at 'Ohana, breakfast and dinner at Chef Mickey's, lunch and dinner at Crystal Palace and dinner at Garden Grill at Walt Disney World and breakfast at PCH Grill, lunch at Ariel's Grotto, breakfast at Storyteller's Cafe and dinner at Goofy's Kitchen at Disneyland and the breakfast at Storyteller's Cafe was by far the best of the bunch. Actually, I have not booked any character meal for the next trip, which is unheard of for me.

Nice update! I kept wondering why you went to CS and not RSR... :scratchin Then I remembered! :rotfl2: I can't get enough of WoC no matter how many times I see it!

What does Graham do while you are in Disney all day? I know there's a lot to do around there, but it makes me curious.

That is quite impressive. I'll definitely have to try it. I haven't done any research on DL yet, but I don't think they do ADRs like WDW. I already bought a book so need to start reading.

I am normally pretty good at acronyms, but this had me puzzd all day. I quickly checked my emails this morning before heading to work. This has kept me amused ever since. Can you please let me know what CS and RSR is? The only thing I could come up with for CS is California Screamin and I don't go near this as it scares me. I drew a complete blank for RSR.

Graham tends to spend a lot of time exploring. That particular day, he had gone to have a ride on the Angel's Flight funicular railway and then went to Long Beach where he did a boat tour. He also really likes Fullerton and usually ends up there at least once every trip.

They do ADRs, but only 60 days in advance and you either have to ring them or send an email.

Day 23

Mickey woke us up again at 7:30 and this time round, we had a bit further to go for breakfast. We had a reservation at Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel. The early morning walk through Downtown Disney was very pleasant. I felt a little lost though when we got to the Disneyland Hotel. When we were there last year, the refurbishment was still in full swing and a lot of it was boarded up. This project is now completed and the building fences have gone. This also means that the access to Steakhouse 55 is now somewhere completely different. Still, we found it without to much trouble. When we got to the podium, I started to get a bit worried. The area was very busy. Sure enough, we were asked to sit in the lounge area until our table was ready. We waited about 10 minutes until we were called. Once we were inside, it was not all that busy. We both had coffee and orange juice followed by New York Steak and Eggs. This consisted of a 7-ounce certified Angus steak, with two eggs, any style and also came with toast or bagel. We both had fried eggs sunny side up. Graham had toast and I went with the bagel. We also got some breakfast potatoes with this and some grapes and strawberries, which had not been mentioned on the menu. I am normally not into breakfast, but this was so delicious.

When we had finished our breakfast, we walked together to the Downtown Disney Monorail station and then I said goodbye to Graham. When I had been online the previous day, I had read that the monorails had a make over to celebrate the upcoming opening of Carsland. They were now called Mona, Mandy and Manny Monorail and had faces on the driver's cab. They also did their own commentary, which was so funny. I got to ride Mona, who is orange. Once I had arrived at Tomorrowland, I headed towards Captain EO. I am not a huge fan of the 3D attractions as most of them freak me out. However, as a lifelong Michael Jackson fan, I had to see this especially as there is no guarantee that this would still be around when we get to Walt Disney World in November. Unfortunately this was down with technical issues. I decided to come back later and headed to Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters instead. True to form, this was pretty much a walk on so I did this ride three times in a row.

Once I had enough of zapping aliens, I headed over to Main Street. I spotted Pluto near the Town Square. He had not much of a line either. As I had not really had a chance to meet Pluto on the cruise, I jumped on this chance. I had a nice hug and his escort took a photo of us. When I had said goodbye to Pluto, I went to the Main Street Train Station. I had not headed there as soon as I got to the park as I had arrived a bit after the park opened and I figured that all the tickets for the Lilly Belle had gone already if she was even out and about that day. I still wanted to try to get some photos of her though. So I waited until the train that had just pulled into the station had left and then I approached one of the cast members there. She confirmed that the Lilly Belle was in operation, but that all the tickets for the day had gone. I had not expected anything different, which is why I never asked for a ticket. I explained that I had tried to take some photos of her when she pulled out of Main Street Station earlier during the trip and that this had not worked out. I told her that this was our last day at Disneyland before returning to the UK and I really was hoping to get a couple of decent photos. She told me to sit down in the waiting area while she checked with the conductor who would be on the train. This was all a bit strange, but I figured that it may need the permission of the conductor for me to be on the platform if I was not getting on the train. I would have been perfectly happy to stand on the other side of the gate to take some photos. She came back a couple of minutes later to say to wait there and the conductor would come and see me shortly. She further explained that the conductor would let me quickly take some photos inside the Lilly Belle before escorting the people on that would have tickets. She did point out that I would only have a minute or two to take my photos. I was actually speechless for a minute or two. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I actually would get to take photos inside the Lilly Belle and that had not been my intention when I asked about photos. I just wanted to get some good photos of the outside. Once I found my words again, I thanked my Fairy Godmother.

Once she was gone, I looked around the station for a bit. Shortly afterwards the conductor showed up and asked if I was the person wanting the photos of the Lilly Belle. I confirmed that I was and she told me that the Lilly Belle was due in in about 20 minutes and that she would come for me. I thanked her, too and then she disappeared out back somewhere. Shortly afterwards, she came out again and told me that she was very sorry that I would not be able to ride the Lilly Belle, but she wanted me to have at least a ticket. At this stage I was actually getting a little emotional. What had started as a perfectly innocent question was starting to turn into some serious Pixie Dust. This was absolutely not what I had expected. I thanked the conductor and told her that the ticket would get a special place in my scrapbook. She disappeared again only to come back about 5 minutes later. She asked me how many people were in my party. I told her that it was just me. She replied that all the spaces had been taken on the next train, but if I was in a position to come back in an hour, they had a spare space on the Lilly Belle that I was welcome to take. I very quickly told her that I would love to and thanked her profusely. She added my name on the list and then I decided what I would do with the next hour. I took a few photos from the station and then I left.

I was positively skipping down the stairs. I decided not to venture too far away as I did not want risk missing my train. Pluto was just coming out again so I had another hug from him. When I finished with Pluto, Gepetto was out near Great Moments with Mr Lincoln. He was a new character for me as so far I had only managed to get photos with Pinocchio and Jimminy Cricket on previous trips. So this was too good to pass up. I just missed Mickey in his traditional outfit, but Minnie was out in her polka dot dress and I was last in line for Donald in his Sailor suit. I have so many photos of the characters in special outfits, but next to no photos of the characters in their traditional outfits. So this was a welcome opportunity. While in line for Donald, I learned something else interesting. The cast member doing crowd control for Donald re-directed people who had not made the line to Pixie Hollow. I knew that Walt Disney World used to have Pixie Hollow before they started on the Fantasyland extension. I had no idea that they had Pixie Hollow at Disneyland, too. So before it was my turn to see Donald, I asked where I can find Pixie Hollow. After all the Pixie Dust that I had received that day, it was only fair that I should pay my respects to Tinkerbell and Friends.

Once I had finished with Donald, I headed back to the station and sat down in the waiting area. It was still a little bit early, but shortly afterwards a large family arrived, too. I expected that they were there for the Lilly Belle, too. Not long after that, the conductor for our train arrived and checked if we were there for the Lilly Belle. She escorted us to the exit gate of the platform where she left us until the platform was clear. Then she came back to us and escorted us to the Lilly Belle. This first glimpse of the inside took my breath away. The whole carriage has got dark wood paneling and luxurious furnishings. She laid down some ground rules. We had to be seated whenever the train was in motion, but could get up to look around and take photos whenever we were stationary. Once we were underway, she told us a bit of the history of the Lilly Belle. The Lilly Belle has only been in service since 1974 (we share the same year of "birth") after the previous VIP car was retired. The Lilly Belle actually started her life as one of the Grand Canyon Observation Cars. Our conductor told us that originally the Disneyland Railroad consisted entirely of enclosed observation cars, but after the Grand Canyon display opened, it was deemed that this could best be viewed from open carriages and the old observation cars were retired. Lillian Bounds Disney was heavily involved in the design of the interior of the Lilly Belle, which is why the car was named after her. Initially a lot of family memorabilia where placed inside the Lilly Belle, but they were later removed. Our conductor asked us to sign the guest book and also showed us a photo album with photos of famous guests that have travelled in the Lilly Belle. When we pulled into New Orleans Square Station, I got up to have a proper look around and to take some photos. A member of the family that I was sharing the ride with offered to take a photo of me and the conductor. All to soon, we got moving again and I had to sit down. Our conductor then asked us who we were, where we came from and how we got to ride on the Lilly Belle. I told her that up to two days earlier I had not realised that mere mortals like me could actually ride in the Lilly Belle and that I was absolutely thrilled to have been given the chance. I got up again to take some more photos when we got to Toon Town Station. Then I just sat back and enjoyed the rest of the ride. The family asked for the commentary to switched on when we approached the Grand Canyon display. All too soon our ride was over. I had experienced something really magical that day and I will never forget this.

When I left Main Street train station, I headed towards Adventureland. I decided to check how long the line was at the kiosk that sells Dole Whips. I had developed a taste for Dole Whip Floats at Walt Disney World in 2009 and had been delighted when I realised that they were available at Disneyland, too. However, last year the lines at this kiosk were always crazy so I never got my Dole Whip Float. When I entered Adventureland, I took some photos and then headed to the kiosk that sells Dole Whip and Dole Whip Floats. There was still a line, but it looked manageable. So I got in line and about 10 minutes later, I had my Dole Whip Float. I headed back towards the hub and sat down to enjoy it.

Once I had finished my drink, I decided to go and find Pixie Hollow. The cast member that I had spoken to earlier had said that it was between the castle and Tomorrowland. I must have walked past there dozens of time and never knew it was there. Still I found it easy enough. There was a bit of a line, but there were a lot of little fairy scenes dotted amongst the landscaping in the area and looking at all the clever detail kept me occupied. There was a family with a girl of around 8 in front of me and she saw all the coins that people had put in the water features and wanted to leave some has well. None of the people with her had any coins. I knew that I had more than enough change in my wallet and got it out to collect the coins together. I gave the little girl all the coins that I had an her face just lit up. Her mother thanked me. It was great to be able to spread a tiny bit of Pixie Dust myself. The coins were duly deposited in the various waterways in this world of the fairies and soon after it was our turn to see the actual inhabitants of Pixie Hollow. I got to see Rosetta first and then Tinkerbell herself. A cast member in the area kindly took photos for me with my camera. The exit for Pixie Hollow is actually in Tomorrowland, so I was right where I wanted to be.
