Disney sneakily announces changes to Pirates of the Caribbean at WDW and DLR in a Disneyland Paris blog post
First of all, no. This news source is the only one describing it as "sneaky". It is a trending topic on social media, and has coverage from many news sources. As far as the initial announcement, doesn't Disney routinely announce things on blogs?
Second of all, all this:
If we really want to be politically correct I feel pirates would be shut down altogether.
So if you are going to sanitize the ride to make it PC might as well just close down the ride.
I just think there is so much that could be considered politically incorrect that is removing this one piece going to solve those problems? I don't think so.
One part of this that troubles me is that so much has to be changed nowadays because someone is offended.
Holy macaroni, I didn't know this was such a heated topic! It's a scene in a ride.. I don't understand the huge uproar about it right now. I mean, haunted houses show murder and things that are MUCH worse than that scene. I understand why they're changing it, but I don't get the hatred for the scene. I mean, the haunted mansion has someone dangling from the ceiling and there's no uproar about that. It's an amusement park. It's fantasty. Just my two cents.
So sick of all the politically correct nonsense. It's a damn ride. No one took it seriously. We can't even laugh at stupid/silly things anymore without a few getting insulted or protesting against it. Why do a few complainers ruin it for the rest of us??????
So will Disney take out the "wicked stepmother" out of Cinderella because stepmothers might get insulted? The political correctness has gone out of control. Don't go see it, watch it, if you are offended. Why ruin it for the rest of us, who know it's "not real" and just a ride, movie, show etc.
What about Gaston's Tavern? He's definitely a misogynist. Are we really going to get rid of everything in the park that's considered remotely offensive? There goes Splash Mountain, and apparently Tiki Room, because it's supposedly racist
At the end of the day I don't really care much if they change the scene, but the consent push to whitewash history and art is counterproductive to progress/understanding in many ways.
This is obviously to take out an "offensive" scene. Sure, Sure this is obviously PC .. and I'm okay with it.
I'm... not happy about this change. I get that Human Trafficking is bad. I don't think most sane and rational humans wouldn't get that. But... the world has become entirely too politically correct for its own good. There are better ways to address the issue than "cleaning up" a 50 year old themepark ride.
Ridiculous, the hippy tree huggers are at it again. If everything that offends a person is taken out, Disney World will be vastly different in 10 years. They are going to have to change almost every attraction in the Magic Kingdom.
People have to stop being so P.C. Jesus Holy Christ.
Political correctness belongs in the real world, it has no place rearing it's ugly head in any theme park ride.
I honestly don't care if anyone is offended by the redhead scene or the well dunking scene or the rum-soaked pirate scene. If they're that fragile that they're offended by a theme park ride, this is the least of their concerns.
This ride has been around for 50 years. Why are people all of a sudden just now deciding they're offended? Is it because of the latest PC craze?
I am not amused but such is life in this generation of oversensitive self-victimization. Pathetic, actually.
To be honest if the roles were reversed and males were being sold. Would people have a problem with it? Heck no, that's because most men and even some women don't take things too seriously.

They are tweaking the ride. They have been tweaking the ride for a while now. Personally I didn't love the addition of the movie franchise into it, but it's their ride to do with as they will. The underlying point here being, where are you pulling these reactions from? Certainly not from the official news release. Yes, some other coverage is putting a "political correctness spin on it", but some news sources are prone to sharing opinion instead of straight fact- same as we have going on here. The actual source material, as linked above, makes no mention of this being altered in corrective action- they note it as an improvement in their eyes. Which we are free to dislike or like.
They have already made too many changes to a classic. And IMO the best ride at Disneyland.
This is probably the most underlying sentiment most who are upset about the change identify with. That's just not how the world works though.
As far as all the other "extra" commentary above- it is impossible for them to make the Disney franchise PC, if that was their aim. They'd have to shut down their parks, shed most of the merchandise and films, and start over. Then in another twenty years do the same. Society is fluid, social norms, societal standards, ideas of fairness- are all fluid, and that is not a feasible achievement. Fortunately for all of us that like Disney, that is not their aim. So why insult people?
As others have noted:
Wait, was there some sort of campaign against this scene and I missed it?
People keep talking about the PC police and how "a few" complainers are messing up the ride, or asking why other rides are not a problem...but I haven't seen a single piece of evidence that this change is being made due to public outcry.
Where was the public outcry for this change? I saw no petitions, no protests, no demonstrations. DISNEY decided to make this change, no one else.
Again, I (nor anyone I'm aware of) didn't call for the removal. It was something Disney decided to do..."
The idea of turning the redhead into a main character makes a lot more sense than just randomly getting rid of the scene for sake of PC (which I have not heard any real complaints about) ..."
Ok so everyone is assuming this is because of "PC police". Do people not realized that hey Disney is deciding to make an old ride fresh by changing a few scenes?
If there has been public outcry, it was certainly not as publicized or protested as this change is.
Disney is probably catering more to this end:
I'm choosing to look at it instead of as politically correctness forcing the change but a different view on historical events with a female pirates finally being represented. As others have mentioned there were some horrible female pirates that gave the men a run for their money.
I think adding an awesome female pirate does add to the ride. I love this scene, I love pirates...but I had questions with it as a child, and that was long ago, and I think it needs replacing. Its not a political statement, its just keeping up with the times.
They're trying to grow a modern audience. They want to appeal to the widest audience possible. Fact of the matter is, most people don't know jack squat about real piracy or its history. Most people won't even notice the change. There are people on this thread on a disney fansite that never noticed the exact details of the scene. It's marketing.
