Canon for my son.

I am looking at an older S2, S3, S5 or even a G6 or G7 (although these may be more than we want to spend).

He is almost 12 and one thing he needs is the ability to flash through the pictures on the back of the screen quickly. He creates cartoons and movies with still screen and would like to flip through and see his creation before downloading.

But besides flipping through quickly, any other thoughts on the above cameras for a first time decent camera to purchase?

Thanks.

I'd suggest this new product.

1. It's new so you don't have to worry about shutter life.

2. It has all the same features as the used one's you are looking for.

3. It's about the same price as what you'd find the later versions of the ones you are looking at.

A really good deal on a new camera is the Nikon L60 at Office Max this week.

It's only $99.00.

That is a great deal.....this same camera is $99 at Office Max?

And it has a 3" LCD.....cool.

I will have to check it out.

Thanks,

Dawn

Wait, are you sure it isn't the P60 on sale?

I agree to go new b/c they are just so cheap now, but there is not a physical shutter on a p&s to worry about failing.

It is the Nikon L60 that is on sale. Sorry for the confusion.

My apologies if I misspoke about the S series. I had read that the S5 had about 25K shutter life. I just assumed it had a moving shutter piece like other cameras.

Anyway, there is a limit and buying used one means that some sort of frequency has lapsed.

I think this is an example for an S2.

I don't think you misspoke, I just wanted the OP to know that it is not the shutter that fails on a p&s. When you see one that failed on a database like that, it is usually nothing to do with the actual image capturing parts that failed. They probably should not even include them b/c it is not the same thing as a DSLR.

Thank you. I can't seem to find any info online about the L60....I can only find a P60. I will try to hit Office Max tonight and see what they have and if I can play with it a bit and see if it fits what we need.

The biggest issue is the ability to flip through the pictures fast and see if the "movie" is made correctly.

Now I wonder if maybe getting a small video camera that also takes still frames might not be better for him.

I am just worried at his rate of losing things.....

Thank you. I wasn't able to get to Office Depot yet. It has been a busy weekend. I may be able to go tomorrow.

I did get to Best Buy today though as I was over that way and did a little poking around. I like the Nikon and the Canon for his needs.

Unfortunately, I also found a new camera for ME! I really like the Canon G10 for just a general carry around camera. :rotfl2:

My current carry around camera is a very old 4MP Sony DSC-S85. It is really not a bad camera, but I am ready for an upgrade.
