Hurricane Irma?

Has anyone cancelled who initially paid for the trip from their Disney vacation account? Just curious how it's being handled as we may be cancelling ours as well, paid from the dva.

Hard morning. Finally cancelled today's trip late last night to find the storm has be downgraded this morning. (SO thankful for that!). Im a glutton for punishment as I keep second guessing what I did even though I did what was the right thing for me to do in the moment. So, so sad this morning. We were supposed to be getting ready to leave for the airport right now. ☹️☹️ Lol - even looked at rebooking our trip this morning but nothing available.

All will be better in a few days but it's just hard right now.

Praying for all in FL.
I'm so sorry. I know you were really looking forward to this trip (the Pop Century thread). I think you did the right thing, and I hope you can rebook soon. Glad you are safe.

Well I woke up to some good news but also not so good news. Waiting for the 11am update. If she keeps moving west then there is a bigger possibility of her staying over water with a more direct path to the big bend area near me

Getting the cat cages and the suitcase ready to go if things don't get better
I will be offline most of the rest of the day (I'll be at Badgers game) so good luck to you. No where is a good path at this point.

Lots of folks keep saying that some locals head to Disney during a storm to stay safe. I understand that some are able to book rooms ahead of time in the resorts, but they seem to be full now. Does that mean people try to ride out the storm in lobbies and stuff? Just curious. Perhaps I've misunderstood and everyone means that locals book rooms ahead of time. Still haven't heard from my family members that evacuated West Palm Beach. Hoping they are busy checking in an prepping and not stuck somewhere without gas!

My cousins are actually booked at 3 different resorts, but they are thinking that by the time all the cancellations go through the system they will just keep their room at SSR and not have to move.

I think most people book last minute once the path of the storm becomes clearer. We've been trying to find something for a few days, but with 4 adults and 2 kids, we haven't found anything. I doubt people shelter in the lobbies, I would rather stay in my house than be stuck in a lobby with kids.

While WDW is considered a safe harbor by many, why take the chance if you don't have too. Why spend so much money to go to Disney during a hurricane? If Irma does hit WDW hard, there will be damage that could take days or weeks to get things back to normal. I just don't get it.

My family is using DVC points, but I see your point. I think if I was living in coastal or southern Florida I would want to move up and inland if I could.

A friend has guilt tripped me enough into maybe cancelling my trip that starts the 17th. He said to go down there would be to interfere with the recovery efforts and keep cast members from their families. Can't say he isn't wrong.

If the parks are open they will need to work weather you are there or not. If you feel it is safe to go and you want to go then go. If you don't feel safe being there then reschedule. Your one reservation is not going to let any cast members stay with there family. If they don't want to go to work they will not go.

Don't have second thoughts. Florida resources need to be used for Florida residents at this time! I have family in Tampa who wont leave because there is no gas or hotels. People are worried about ME buses getting them to resorts while some people are worried about getting out of harms way.

Do you mean for the locals? I know for us at least, I'm confident buildings at Disney are going to still be standing, and I would imagine any power loss would be brief. I can't say the same for my house! We could have pretty extensive damage, and it's pretty much guaranteed that we'll lose power. Disney would be safer and more comfortable and for us, that's worth the cost. We just can't find a room!

I wish there were more rooms still available for locals.

Sounds like a sensationalist attitude, the Cast Members working are volunteers, nobody is being pressed in to service here, and I seriously doubt you being in Disney World (an isolated, self contained district of its own) a week after the fact is going to hamper anyone's recovery. I can, and will, say he is wrong, and probably just attention seeking.

I've never thought of Disney as having the responsibility of providing a storm shelter for locals. Locals have had plenty of time to make reservations and frankly should know better. I have no ill will toward "outsiders" i.e. tourists who have chosen to be at Disney right now. Welcome, stay safe. It will be a trip to remember.

My Southwest Flight for Tuesday out of Atlanta just got cancelled. Southwest's computer system must be on overload since I'm unable to access it to see if I need to move the flight to Wednesday and if there is anything available.

I'll need to change the rental car and call DVC Member Services again once I get the flight issue worked out. I'll have to try again later.

This is one time when being a DVC member is actually working against me since there is nothing available until next year for rebooking.

Stay safe everyone!

I don't think the people of Tampa had much notice at all that they would be taking such a direct hit. I feel for anyone needing to make a last minute adjustment to their plans based on an unexpected turn in the storm's path.

While the forecast did certainly get worse, Tampa and Miami have both been told for days to be ready for such a catastrophe. Every single forecast was followed with "this is a very powerful, very large, unpredictable storm, if you're in South Florida you should expect to be hit" or similar rhetoric. I feel for them, and I hope they can find refuge anywhere and anyway possible, but it's not fair to say this was a surprise to anyone. Even up in the Orlando area we've been watching closely with one hand on a suitcase if things changed for us.
