ACK! Our school system uses an app that allows us to know when school bus is near house, might be late, etc.
I got a notification this morning, and sure enough... the bus pulled up to the house right on time. They are obviously making test runs.

They don't start back until August 12, which is a week later than last year... but still almost a month earlier than we went back to school as kids.

I hope the kids are making the most of their "Free" time!

We've already done the school supply run, otherwise you get slim 'pickins.

School here gets out by Memorial Day and starts back in early August.
As a kid, we always got out Memorial Day and went back last week of August.

They are moving toward more of a year-round calendar with less downtime in between.

The calendar is wonky, not sure how families where both parents work manage it.

They have:
Fall break (early October)
Thanksgiving week
winter holiday from around Dec 21 to Jan 7.
Spring break (April)
Traditional holidays like labor day, mlk day, etc
And several teacher work days wrapped into 4 day weekends.

They go back August 28 here, so that will be close to Labor Day. We were in Walmart Saturday, and all of the summer stuff has been shoved to one side and school supplies are all over the place. I noticed that some 'winter' clothes were also starting to be put out. We just had 5 days of almost 100 degree weather, what's the rush?

My dgd is going to go to pre k this year and I am so excited for her.
School supplies are coming out at stores and the first weekend of August our state has tax free school supplies and hurricane supplies weekend.

The kids go back the 12th as well

Yep, plenty of school districts have more breaks and some of longer duration during the school year than they did decades ago, so they need to start earlier.

They have:
Fall break (early October) -never had this as a kid
Thanksgiving week-only the Thursday and Friday back in the stone age.
winter holiday from around Dec 21 to Jan 7.-Was usually about December 23 to January 2 or 3.
Spring break (April)-same
Traditional holidays like labor day, mlk day, etc-same, but we started after Labor Day and MLK day wasn't a holiday yet.
And several teacher work days wrapped into 4 day weekends.-Maybe one or two days off for teacher's in-service.

Some even have a spring break in the fall too. I learned that right here on the Dis.

I've also see the test runs this week and they drive me nuts. I get that they need to drive the routes and learn the roads, but I really wish thye wouldn't turn the flashing red lights on. It makes zero sense that it's a crime to pass a bus that isn't transporting kids. We have enough traffic problems (DC area) without having to randomly stop for an empty bus.

DGD starts tomorrow!! First grade!!

They have 2 weeks in Oct., 2 weeks in Dec. and 2 weeks in March. Get out around Memorial Day

.....and winter, too. I wonder what those schools call the few weeks off in June, July and part of August?? ;) :teeth:

My oldest granddaughter starts preschool (thru the public schools in Indianapolis) August 8th! I don't think I have ever gone school shopping in mid July before but Gramma just had to find the perfect dress for her!!

We have a customer in western Texas who start the year in late July. It really surprised me the first time I heard that.

Yikes! Not here! We still have the full month of August through the day after Labor Day, thank goodness but I am sure you stopped well before end of June, like NY.

Same with us, up in Canada. Going back to school this early seems mean.

Well here, we go back first week of August. But.... We get two weeks off in October and two weeks off in March that we wouldn't otherwise get. Note the two week semester break around Christmas would occur no matter the schedule. I kind of like two weeks off every quarter and just two months rather than three in the summer. Wish they did that when I was in school.

You're not randomly stopping. It's good to get people back in the habit of stopping for the bus before they're full of kids.
