Take the pledge to continue to wear a mask during the Covid - 19 pandemic

A couple reasons; the hypocrisy, the ever changing suggestions, I don’t believe a mask will help, I don’t think it’s more contagious than other viruses. Are we going to start mandating masks during flu season?
Someone earlier asked where the line is. Well where is it? Are you going to go along if they make a vaccine mandatory?
I don't think they'll make a vaccine mandatory. The enforcement of that would be very difficult IMO. But, if the choice was keeping my job or refusing the vaccine, I'd get the vaccine. If the choice is my kids going to school or turning down the vaccine, they get the vaccine.

As for your reason, I do think they did not handle mask recommendations well. I do think they've learned more since their first "you don't need a mask unless you're sick". I think a mask does help. As far as it not being more contagious, I found this page interesting... https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html

They estimate for the 2017-18 year, 45 Million people caught the flu. Compare that to the 3 million with Covid, and yea, that's a big difference. BUT, only 61,000 died. Compare that to the 130k dead of covid, and that's a huge difference. Now, if they're right and 10 times as many people have come down with Covid, that still puts 45 million with the flu vs 30 million with covid, so closer, but twice as many people have died. Yea, you can say the number aren't accurate, but I don't think the inaccuracies make much of a difference.

I pulled up to wal mart Monday, they had a sign out front that they were testing for COVID inside. Not sure bringing all those people that think they have it and are probably sick into a grocery store is the best decision. I’m sure those in charge of us Americans that can’t be left to make our own choices about what is right, thought this was a good idea though.
I turned around and went elsewhere.

Yikes, I agree! I would have left too.

(I think for all the testing around here that I know of, they come out to your car.)

I'm still for wear a mask, though -

"the hypocrisy, the ever changing suggestions" - I don't think that just because recommendations changed as we learned more, we should ignore them all.

"I don’t believe a mask will help" - Even if it doesn't completely prevent transmission, I think it helps some. And it doesn't hurt to try.

"Are we going to start mandating masks during flu season?" - The difference I see between COVID and flu is the asymptomatic carrier aspect. If I've got the flu, I feel awful, and I'm not wandering around spreading it without knowing it.

"Are you going to go along if they make a vaccine mandatory?" - They won't need to make a vaccine mandatory for me. I'm looking forward to when it's available!

Can you explain what hypocrisy?
To my knowledge masks have been about protecting others from ME. What kind of selfish member of the human race would I have to be to not wear one?

This is a weird time - in this climate - a seat belt law would NEVER pass.

Would they have lived had they not been wearing the seat belt? Seat belts don't protect against every possibility but they certainly increase your odds of survival.

I ride horses...for a living. I wear a helmet every single time I get on one. The shows I attend do mandate I wear one. I mandate them to be worn when mounted any time on my property. Plenty of people have been injured or killed in riding accidents despite wearing a helmet. But the bottom line is wearing one increases your survival rate. Anyone who rides without a helmet is crazy and flirting with death.

So, you are agreeing that not all areas should take the same precautions because not all areas of the country are the same?

I think anyone around other people not of their same household should wear a mask, regardless of where they are. There are at least 681 cases in his community.

If a person goes to any common business or office, or to visit others they should wear a mask.

But at home, no.

For me, I’ll add, that being asked to wear a mask would get better results than someone trying to mandate it. If mandated, I’ll wear it under my noise, just covering my chin, adjusting it, and removing it often, etc.
When I am asked. I complied, respected that request, and wore it the entire time.
“You can catch more flies with honey, than vinegar”

Are you two? How utterly childish.

The hypocrisy has been explained several times over the past couple months. What kind of person demands the government make mandates so they can feel better, instead of taking precautions to protect themselves?

It wasn’t just changing recommendations. It was different recommendations for different businesses and group gatherings. They lost credibility
"I don’t believe a mask will help" - Even if it doesn't completely prevent transmission, I think it helps some. And it doesn't hurt to try.
I don’t think it helps at all, but if you feel like it helps, feel free.

You catch the flu from someone.

I won’t be getting it, mandated or voluntary.

With the flu you can pass it around before you symptoms appear. Around a day or so before symptoms appear you can be considered contagious (it can hit you like a truck that's for sure once those symptoms hit ::yes::). You can technically have the flu but not be symptomatic and thus can spread it without knowing completely.

But these days that's about the only comparison we should be making between the two rather than rehashing the closing things down, mask wearing stuff between COVID-19 and the flu.

I didn’t think it was for my protection though?
It IS for your protection. Think about it...
1) If it didn't stop the virus, why do they say you shouldn't touch the outside of your mask? If the virus is on the outside of your mask, then it stopped it from getting to the inside.
2) If the mask of an infected wearer can stop the virus from getting out via cough or sneeze (and think about how fast it's going at that point), how does the virus get through your mask? It's obviously slowed down by that point.
