Cases rising or dropping by you?

Looks like California is about to go back into total stay at home. https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article244438372.html

Not sure that is what it is saying. I am one of those people who is staying at home except for work and grocery shopping. But I also don't see how going to Kohl's because your kids need new shoes or summer clothes is any more risky than going to Walmart because you need dish soap. I think most of the higher risk places of business are shut down (in the majority of the state) - in door dinning, bars, gyms, personal services, etc. The one thing that isn't closed that I think that should be are Casinos. I have mixed feelings about travel for leisure I think it CAN be done safely but I also don't think we should be encouraging people to do so.

Like I said, time will tell. Watching this evening's news on multiple stations, I don't see how we can avoid another shutdown. Food at Walmart is a tad more necessary that shoes or summer clothing. I agree about Indian Casinos but understand the situation. They are considered sovereign nations, so not subject to state laws.

Not to be argumentative, but you didn’t say time will tell. You said it is about to happen. And those two phrases DO mean different timelines, whether you think the words matter or not.

I agree with you that things in CA are bad. But another statewide shut down goes against everything Newsom has said. And also against the article you posted, in which he said many counties. That is not state wide.

I have been reading a lot of news out of the LA area and even the county health official has said she doesn’t see another shut down coming. The city of Los Angeles is the only one who has said he’s looking at it.

And every article I’ve read said it will take 3-4 weeks to see the affects of these current roll backs which gives another week or so depending on location. But I stand by Newsom would not have approved salons opening outdoors (after already shutting them down again), nor allow districts to petition for in person teaching if he’s going to shut down the entire state in the next few days. He would have left both of those alone.

As I said earlier, that doesn’t mean we won’t have another one at some point. Just not right now.

I don't necessary disagree that we are a mess. But the things that need to change are not necessarily things the government can control. It is the gatherings & parties that are causing a lot of the spike.

So it is okay for children to be naked & shoeless? Children grow. They need new shoes & new clothes fairly regularly.

I don't disagree. LOL, I remember celebrating when my kids wore clothing out instead of outgrowing it. But Walmart has both clothing and shoes and groceries and toilet paper!

Following this logic if we go back to "essentials" only then Walmart & Target should be closed too as everything essential (food, laundry detergent, tp, etc) you can get at the grocery store.

The guy sounds a bit off his gourd, TBH. He wants counties to go back to a March-level shut down until there is a 2% positivity rate, and if a neighboring county has more than 2% but your county is under 2, well then you still have to stay shut down too so the counties don't bleed into each other. CDC says a rate of 5% is considered under control. He also wants to make all visitors from any other state that has more than 2% positivity to quarantine for 2 weeks, so practically everyone. He actually thinks that instead of managing the virus, we should be working to eradicate it, which we all should know by now is ridiculous and impossible.

Well, here Walmart and Target are grocery stores. Their grocery departments are larger than grocery stores.

Doesn't matter. They sell too many non essentials that could attract people to lingering. I mean if we are closing stores due to control the spread let's do it to the bare minimums. Grocery Stores & Gas Stations.

I don't really think this is the solution.

Well, at least Walmart enforces a maximum number of people in a store, enforces masks, has traffic flow marked on the aisles. Sounds like they would be the stores you want to keep open to reduce spread. One store, get everything you need.

There is a LOT of grocery items I can't get at my Walmart as it is just a regular Walmart, not a Super Walmart with an entire grocery store plus regular Walmart stuff. You can get everything you "need" at the grocery store without a lot of things you don't.

Orange County CA. Hospitalizations leveling off after hitting a high of 722.

That was last Saturday. We learned today:
"Orange Health Care Agency officials also confirmed that they are increasingly transferring Covid patients from hospitals into skilled nursing facilities."
So this might account for some of the leveling off. Basically accounting tricks to make the numbers look better. (That's the cynical view, anyway.) I hope that practice doesn't backfire spectacularly like it did in New York state, and lead to a skyrocketing death count.

Almost all the Walmarts here have groceries. One stop reduces exposure. Safer.

Does your wife ever tell you that you don’t listen to her? Because you are certainly guilty of it round here.

Not all Walmart have great grocery selections. But grocery stores have all the essentials. If you want to close down the nonessential businesses then Walmart can be closed as well as Kohl’s.

Ours here doesn’t. None of the ones around me do.
I think

I think all the original Walmarts that opened when they first came to California in the 1990s around here have been closed and replaced with Super Walmarts. And full disclosure, the Walmart I shop at is a Neighborhood market, so just a grocery store with pharmacy. No clothing etc, just a grocery store.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I didn't realize there were any Walmarts left that don't have a grocery store. Everywhere I've lived for many years & both of the small towns my MIL & my family live in have groceries in their Walmart. It's obvious that opinions can be influenced by personal circumstances. That's one reason we have a major disconnect based on location. It would be so nice, if we could all get on the same page.

Here as in Sacramento or here as in CA? Both @disneychrista and I have both said they aren’t Super Walmarts in our area. We don’t live that far away from you. But yet again (there was a beach parking lot convo a few months ago that involved the 3 of us), you feel the need to keep repeating this like we don’t know about our own area. Btw, the one in my area has been opened since the 90s.

I tend to agree. Except that the three of us talking about Walmarts in CA don’t live that far apart (relatively).

The truth is it’s a rather ridiculous debate to be having especially since I don’t think we’re shutting down to that level. I was really just trying to explain that it’s not the same throughout the state, so blanket statements don’t work.

I understand. Blanket statements don't really work anywhere.
